OK, i hold my hands up, it's a what car thread. I do about 40k miles a year for work with signs of that getting even higher!

I currently run an Octavia, but although it's very cheap and reliable it's also a really rubbish environment to spend a lot of time in. So, requirements:-

  • Must be worthy of a slot in the "bargain barges" thread, so a very comfy place to spend time
  • Up to £5k really - but cheaper the better, any left over is the kit-car fund hehe
  • Automatic
  • DERV - when i said "modern diesel" i mean common rail or something equally as powerful, not an old unit injector type
Find me links folks. biggrin

You can get an e39 530d for under £4k

Diesel budget barges do not come better than that

You need a company car!!

I'd be interested to see how you get on in terms of reliability putting 40k a year on what is already gonna be a fairly high mileage car.

I didn't realise there was a huge difference in power between common rail and recent unit injector engines, the VW CR and PD engines being a case in point, surely?

There is a very big difference in power delivery between (eg) VW TDi engines and (eg) the BMW CR engines.

Yeah, this is my point. My Octavia is an Old Unit Injector Type (110 TDi), it's pre-PD. It's OK as power delivery goes, but not even close to smooth. I'm looking at the 530d at the moment...

I'm moving from VW to BMW diesel power and it's astonishing.

I'm sure plenty will guffaw but have you looked at a Rover 75 CDTI?...

For that price range you could get a Volvo S60/80/V70 D5...

Ok we're lacking somewhat on the BMW, but its got the oomph and will probably have done a LOT less miles than the bimmer.

Excellent barge. Not difficult to squeeze an extra few horses out of either.

I have had a Passat TDi in 110bhp form, and now have a Alhambra with the same engine. They truly rattle your teeth out, but run veg oil no problem 90% mix. I had a 530d ex plod with 60k on an X, had a slightly dodgy 3rd gear which occassionally wouldn't go into third the first try otherwise apart from PDC sensors was very reliable. 35mpg achievable at high motorway speeds. I had a tuning box on mine and loved it. The difference between the older TDi engines and the Beemer is amazing.

That looks lush. And being as i'm sticking 40k per year on there is little point paying for lower-mileage cars. They will just depreciate more.

I have a late facelifted E39. Its an SE so rides beautifully (and is cheaper!) and is the 530i Has virtually every toy still feels like 43k when new.

Doing long distance at high speeds does early 30s mpg. Not much different to the 530d. No turbo. No injectors. Better ZF autobox which is tougher with less torque going through it. Awesome car.

I do 20k pa had mine 4mths done almost 8k. It is COMFORTABLY within your budget.

(Mine has just passed 150k btw)
