RE: Two CLK GTRs Fall Under The Hammer
Discussion
never been sure about the look of these things. they are a bit, how can i politely put it, .... ugly?
saying that though the engine bay looks like a work of art doesnt it?
and if i'm honest - i would buy the pair of them if i had the money, drive them like they were built to be driven, do the Ace Cafe thing on the Tuesday night &, as some wag said earlier, go to all the piston head meets, park the pair of them, take the rear bodywork off & leave them to be looked by all & sundry.
then i would drive them home, polish them & wait for the next trip out.
ugly but awesome. the rarest of supercars?

That's a strange old business they've got there... While you're shopping for a CLK-GTR that looks like someone blew a Ribena Berry's head off in the back (Vincent?) you could also pick up...

There is one of these on the top floor of a Car gallery (showroom) for either Renault or Peugeot in Bangkok on the Rama IX toll road on the right hand side as you head to the airport. next time I'm there _May I'll take some pics.

Didn't Flemke drive one of these and say it was utter st?
Si, senor, and the reason that chassis #13 was first registered in '05 was that, although M-B had had to produce 25 in order to get the homologation for racing, until '04 they had only managed to sell the first 12.That's also the reason why they made some roadsters. They had these 13 lemons sitting there gathering dust, and eventually some bright spark thought that they could shift a few if they were to chop off the roofs and flog the newborn roadsters to idiots.

I would like to hear more about your encounter with one these rare beasts, please.
Was it really that bad? Or just crap compared the Mclaren?
What was wrong with it?
Which car did you drive? And when did you drive it?

Now I see why you call yourself "The Riddler".
It wasn't 13, and this was prior to '05.
Why is the CLK-GTR a truly horrible road car?
For starters, as you can see in the Needell video, just getting in is a major production. It makes getting into an F1 seem as easy as falling off a log.
Straight-cut gears: they do not belong in a road car. Ever. The noise is inherently unpleasant, very hard on the ear, and it overwhelms the experience.
The space inside is tiny. There isn't even a real passenger footwell; it's more a slot into which it's posible to jam two small feet.
Once you're on the move, the gear selector is fine, but getting the bloody thing into first, even when it's warmed up, can sometimes take 5-6 attempts. So you're sitting there at a red light, or a give-way, and you want to set off, but you can't, because you're farting around with the stupid paddles. As with the noise of the gearbox, this is not a problem during a race, but you're not racing.
Sure, the engine's got loads of power, and the vehicle has tremedous brip, as you would imagine. There is the small detail that, on public roads, you cannot come close ever to needing that power or that grip, but, but...
It's really no different from the flip side of a car that had been designed exclusively for the public roads - say a big, fat Audi - but which you've taken out of its habitat and onto a racing circuit. Sure, it is physically possible to operate the vehicle on the circuit, but in relation to proper racing cars it will be unavoidably awful.

That makes perfect sense. I recall being fortunate enough to be in Stockholm one summer's day when a convoy of XJ220, F50, F1 and CLK GTR were travelling. All behaving themself except for the CLK which hung back, did some blipping then a very minor burnout. I was torn between this was yobbish behaviour or restraint but the poor bugger was probably just trying to move the thing...flemke said:
