I've got to admit, I don't like the idea of replicas. Don't care if the manufacturer wants to sue due to "devaluing" I don't buy into that. A genuine one will always look obvious as a genuine one and a replica will always be just that. Were it to look so realistic so as to fool an experienced observer, then there is no damage to the brand as nobody could tell the difference!
Also who was it who said "imitation is the best form of flattery"
The ide of replica concept cars though??? Hmmmmm that has legs, no silly fools thinking you're trying to make something you're not, or to imitate another without the performance. This way you can pick the right donor vehicle to give the right engine for your needs. I like the idea of 150mph concept cars you can actually drive!

Really? How close would you need to look / touch / inspect some of the better GT40 / Cobra / 356 "recreations" to spot the fake?mat205125 said:

"Jude" ? I hope your engineering has better attention to detail. Actually, I don't. What pleasure do you get from knocking off someone else's work ? If you genuinely have the skills, why not do something yourself ? You could be the next Lotus / TVR / Whatever ! How much will the finished thing be anyway ? I'm guessing about the same price as something decent that isn't a knock-off. I've always thought these replicas are bought by folks who don't actually know much about cars and want to impress others who know even less about cars. I'd be embarrassed to own one myself.
Sorry, sounds harsh, but you've set yourself up for a fall here I think.
That's a bit harsh. The way I see it there's two very different classes of replica. The first is simple rebodys like the, generally awful looking, MR2 355 kits. These are almost entirely for poseurs. Then you've got the 'proper' kits with an independent chassis underneath and (hopefully) an appropriate engine like the good cobra, GT40 and some of the lambo replicas. While a lot of these are sold to poseurs I can also see the appeal to someone who's out for a decent drive. There isn't really a lot of choice if you want a mid engined car with a big V8/V12 and have 30k or so to spend. Basically 2nd hand Ultima or a shonky 2nd hand Ferrari which will cost the earth to service.Sorry, sounds harsh, but you've set yourself up for a fall here I think.
You can say 'do your own thing' with the styling, but the truth is that this is the area that kit manufacturers are traditionally rubbish at. Better to go with something that looks good.

I've always wondered this myself. Why would anyone want to slap a load of GRP onto an MR2 or 406 Coupe, when the same money could get them something like a GTM Libra below:Probably because everybody's "spec sheet" for what they want their car to be is different, and some people just want to drive a car that looks good to the layman that wont spot a fake. Whether or not that is wrong, or pointless is a matter for discussion, however I have to admire anyone that spends time and money on building / owning the car that makes them happy.

I remember "Rabbit" doing a small Zonda style car based on the MK3 MR2.
The rear end is awful though:

I'm not sure how far things went with this but it's more of a "homage" than a straight copy I guess.

changed my mind! Envy the near complete mould looks good! Fair play for continuing it. What engine will you go for? What chassis? Engine surely an LSx of some kind for power/cost/weight (as light as you can get!)
That body on an Ultima chassis would be a nice toy, however my personal opinion is a little anti-fake for this car.Replica? Recreation? Tribute? Fake?
There are loads of words to describe the cars that people construct to various levels of authenticity, and those words are often chosen depending on whether they wish to be meant as a compliment or as a derogatary (sp?) term.
If Envy were accurately modelling a "tribute" bodyshell of the car below, that I could buy and graft onto an accurately proportioned Ultima style high performance chassis with LSx power, I'd be beating their door down with a deposit cheque. It's almost impossible for me to justify, however, why I think that a replica Sauber is hyper cool, and the replica Zonda isn't.
Possibly the most beautiful modern GT racer ever IMO

I can see the arguments for both sides with these cars but my opinion? Anyone who buys or builds these things is obviously a petrol head,& that's a good thing right?
Just because it doesn't fit with what you're into doesn't mean it's not worthy in it's own right.
A lot of people look at my car & think it's a total abomanation of a thing! But me,I love it & it does exactly what I bought it for.
Some replicas (or continuations) have got such a standing that they're even allowed to race under fia rules as originals.
Obviously this zonda won't be that but fair play to anyone who has a go & makes one.
