Very nice. I think i prefer it to the Golf and the Focus. But what colour is best?
Viper Green, of course! smile

I looked into ordering one of these, but the lead times are going to be massive, if the standard lead times are anything to go by, and you aren't guaranteed to get one. Apparently the dealer will take your order and then VW will decide how many each dealer will get. If you are lucky you will get one, ifn not tough luck.

Now if it where a V6 and AWD then that would be a different matter.
Yep, you'd have a heavy car, with poor performance and inert steering. Don't you think VW learnt from the mistake that was the R32?

It's gorgeous! I'd prefer it with a V6 for the noise, and with the MK6 Golf interior, but otherwise it's pretty much perfect.
Having looked at both interiors, albeit not the R versions, I'd say the Scirocco interior is nicer. The leather option is certainly nicer than the Golf's.

Weight is the key problem leading to lesser handling so you can't just dismiss that. The car is already carrying extra with the drivetrain.

Powerwise, the VW V6 is pretty crap anyway compared to the straight sixes BMW produce. Much better having the lighter, faster and more frugal 4 cylinder Turbo unit in a car badged R.

The V6 is better suited to GT. Case closed.
As much as its obvious that having a larger engine such as the V6 is going to unweight the car. VW managed it with the R32, hence the reason I even mentioned it. So for me if it has been possible before with good affect there is no reason why it couldnt be done again. The only reason I can see is emissions and fuel cost.

Edit just read a few posts.

Was the Golf R32 really a failure?

I take it you've heard one then Dave?
I have heard the latest offerings of golf GTI's and the TSI engine's. I have a rough idea of the sound. It'll more then likely just be a louder more muffled sound rather then the current quiet one. smile

Perhaps I am wrong.

Hmm, they didn't though really. Compare it to a regular GTi or Edition 30 and the difference is massive.

You're not wrong in that the R32 sounds better. In fact it sounds amazing. The 2.0 TSI needs an aftermarket exhaust to make it sound decent.

Sod the MkV1 derived R cars and the 8P S3.....the pricing has come to a point that a £40k B8 S4 S tronic (avec Technology Pack & Full Drive Select- including Quattro Sports Diff) represents better value than the lot imo.

This is a fantastic car, i'm glad to see that sports cars are now firmly in VWs agenda again, after years of utter dullness. (The years between the Corrado VR6s death and the birth of the MK5 GTI)

I'm glad VW haven't used 4wd with the Scirocco. That would have been dull.

I am sorry but I am not sure what you are getting at? I am not debating what car is best here. The R may be much better but for me it is far to Dull for the R badge. Now if it where a V6 and AWD then that would be a different matter.
Fair enough. To my mind if it was a 4wd V6 it would be a worse car in just about every way (noise being the one exception).
And why exactly is that? Yes it would weigh more but apart from that why would it be worse in just about every way?
Drive an I4 TT back to back with a V6 one (which is 4wd) or a mk5 Golf GTi back to back with an R32 and you'll probably know. A heavy V6 hung over the front end of that chassis absolutely ruins the handling, IMO and I find VW's 4wd system thoroughly underwhelming.

Of course the generic 2.0 TFSI cars are lighter and thereby more nimble/agile in terms of pure driving dynamics vis a vis the V6 engined stuff. Although a R32 on KW V3+ H&R Anti-Roll bars isn't quite the boat that the deriders puport.

But on a wet B road, the R32 is much more efficient in its use of power and definately conveys it worth. In the dry, you can floor it as soon as the exit is in view. For all the malignment, the Haldex system receives, it can be used to one's advantage, it takes time to fully acclimatise to its intricacies. Also the R32 has better brakes....than any universal MKV derived 2.0 TFSI.

The Golf R has the lighter (than the R32s V6) 2.0 TFSI, with R32 size brakes and Haldex AWD. In theory, it should be a winning combination.

It also has much better (IMHO) interior and exterior styling than an Audi S3.

With a limited run of 500 for 2010, it's gotta be a winner. Surely?

Mk4 R32? Lupo GTI? Mk4 GTI Anniversary (180bhp)? Touareg W12 Sport?

Driven all of them, they were all about as 'utterly dull' as your knowledge of modern VWs.

As for the new 'Rocco, a forum that decides on a brilliantly original, superbly built, spacious, nimble, classy new coupe by the design of its wheels really needs to grow up!!

friend of mine is a real vw nut and he will love the new r
personally i have little interest in vw products. but what i will say is i once drove my m8s r32 mk5 or mk2 r32 if you want to be anal version, honestly it was slow heavy drank fuel and frankly was about as exciting to drive as a toyota camry the only resounding feature was the exhaust note,so cant see how it even compares to the r. he only had it 3 months, r32, and said it was the worst dullest golf he has ever had and no it wasnt something wrong with it other than it was an r32,this is from the man who has owned more vw's than most people have had in a lifetime the new r sounds good but for me to ever be interested in a vw it would suddenly have to become reasonably rare be cheap and never be over inflated to holywood hysteria like kudos the golf being the worst.
i had a choice start of this year 5 year old knackerd golf gti that handled like a slob or megane r26 for the same money just turned a year old with quarter the mileage, quicker better drive cheaper to run the only bad point is some turd stole it.

Just joined this site having read about and viewed Scirocco R which has finally been launched. Not 4 wheel drive...what a waste of time. Owned both mark Golf R32's and foolishly fell for the good looks of the Scirocco and bought TSI...BIG MISTAKE! Test drove it in the dry and now that I live with it I realise how poor it is compared with R32. It can't handle the power it already has never mind any extra. To anyone considering...get the TSI and have it chipped for same output at only £500. You'll still skid all over the road and curse everytime you drive it in the wet but at least it will save you money. Better still, buy an old Golf R32...wish I still had mine! Poor poor poor car!!!
