I would love a Fuego. I think I fell for the quirky French lines and odd wheel design when I first saw one in 'Bergerac' as a young lad, being driven by some woman who was a jewel thief. I believe the bird was quite tidy too so that may have had something to do with it.

Happy days cloud9

Good shed.

oooh.... the painful memories have come flooding back!!!

I needed a desperation car (you know, the one you have to buy to keep mobile because your 'real' car has just caught fire..) and I bought a Fuego automatic... tax and test for £95! Beat the seller down because the top edge of the windscreen was held in with gaffer tape..and it had no door locks.... oh, and the exhaust was held up with boot laces...
Also failed to mention the head gasket was replaced with Ce-lit...the rear brake hoses had jubilee clips on them as the proportioning valve was knackered...and the gearbox had lost 3rd...
But the inside was very retro cool! It did handle reasonably well, quite brisk off the traffic lights! Thankfully after 5 weeks (and an insurance payout) I was able to scrap the Fuego and buy something better (well, an Alfa 164).. Would love a good Fuego Turbo for it's novelty now!

Really? when was this? I know Ireland has a rep for being a bit strange but when I lived there most cars had a passenger window.

Not so sure about the SOTW in question looking "pretty tidy".
The near side doesn't seem to have a straight panel on it!

Hehe - funny you should mention the Rancho Gizmo! My dad had both a Fuego and a Rancho - one after the other !

I keep waiting for the Rancho to appear as SOTW ( or be mentioned at all on any car site.. )

There was this Italian girl I had an unhealthy crush on at school. Her equally Italian family biggrin used to ferry her to and from there. They had a black Fuego Turbo (and also a blue-purple Alfasud 1.3Ti.) Needless to say I was well into both those cars at the time...

I've not seen one of these for many many years.
My dad toyed with the notion of buying one new when I was a kid, but was put off when the Renault salesman told him that it wasn't very good. I think he bought a '5 Gordini instead.
Pretty rare car these days, well done for being different this week guys
I seem to remember my dad getting very close to buying one as well. Don't know why he didn't seal the deal but since we had a (I can hardly bring myself to say it) Nissan Bluebird on the drive in the very early 80s, he must have decided to go with that instead. Now that was a car that succumbed to rust! Must have bought it in 82 and it was gone by late 84. But in that time the leading edge of the bonnet had completely disintegrated and had been patched with filler - it must have rotted completely through in about two years!

I would stake my life savings on that car not being around now.

As already mentioned... the rear lights have value at least, to us Wedge owners....

Lights are inverted...

My tribute to the Fuego several years ago. It handled suprisingly well after i welded the engine mounts up and removed the interior

LuS1fer, bang on as far as I'm concerned - am waiting for an SOTW Renault 20/30 for another debate...

Coming on boost was a complete giggle though smile Even more laggy than a Saab 99 turbo, if that's possible.

I had one of these when I was at college back in 1982 - loved that car. Great memories, but the one that stands out:
Some jealous dick poured a bad of sugar down the neck of the fuel tank. Luckily a drunken student spotted this on the way back from the union and gave me the heads up. I replaced the tank (which was rusty anyway) then started to plot my revenge.

The Student accommodation caretaker for our block was a bit of a strange chap and bought cans of food from somewhere - but they never had any labels on them - he would sell them on as pot luck. Sometimes you got beans or soup other times dog food!

He sold a few tins of awful dog food, even the students wouldn't eat it, they were quickly returned. I bought the whole batch off him! I then proceeded to mix it up in a big bucket, cant remember what else I added but it turned out to be pretty disgusting.

I then followed the sugar terrorist, waited until he was in a lecture, then went back to his flat. Popped the lock on his door and proceeded to cover every single item he owned with the dog food gunge mixture.

Basically wet myself laughing every time I saw him for the next 3 years!

I always remember a car wash with a sign saying 'no renault fuegos' - did that back screen break easily or something?
Yes! My father-in-law had one and managed to break the back window twice, once with a calor gas bottle that rolled back and once he and the mother-in-law were left sitting in a pile of broken glass and soap suds in a carwash. Thank you for reminding me,I'm sitting here laughing manically to myself at that happy memory!

26 year old Renault with notorious electrics? Dangerous games. Serious retro cool though. Not nice to drive as I did once, but still, no one will know what it is - great!
