I always remember a car wash with a sign saying 'no renault fuegos' - did that back screen break easily or something?
Yes! My father-in-law had one and managed to break the back window twice, once with a calor gas bottle that rolled back and once he and the mother-in-law were left sitting in a pile of broken glass and soap suds in a carwash. Thank you for reminding me,I'm sitting here laughing manically to myself at that happy memory!
didn't happen in Bishop Auckland did it? that's where I saw the sign

Now reduced to £490 apparently:

Dash with all the wires hanging down looks vaguely suspect...

Hehe - funny you should mention the Rancho Gizmo! My dad had both a Fuego and a Rancho - one after the other !

I keep waiting for the Rancho to appear as SOTW ( or be mentioned at all on any car site.. )
Only 7 left according to the Rancho owners club guy I chatted to the other year at the Bromley Pageant apparently.

Fuego - Way cool, first production car with remote central locking non?

Brilliant shed!

However, I'd bet that it would breakdown immediately.

I had one of these when I was at college back in 1982 - loved that car. Great memories, but the one that stands out:
Some jealous dick poured a bad of sugar down the neck of the fuel tank. Luckily a drunken student spotted this on the way back from the union and gave me the heads up. I replaced the tank (which was rusty anyway) then started to plot my revenge.

The Student accommodation caretaker for our block was a bit of a strange chap and bought cans of food from somewhere - but they never had any labels on them - he would sell them on as pot luck. Sometimes you got beans or soup other times dog food!

He sold a few tins of awful dog food, even the students wouldn't eat it, they were quickly returned. I bought the whole batch off him! I then proceeded to mix it up in a big bucket, cant remember what else I added but it turned out to be pretty disgusting.

I then followed the sugar terrorist, waited until he was in a lecture, then went back to his flat. Popped the lock on his door and proceeded to cover every single item he owned with the dog food gunge mixture.

Basically wet myself laughing every time I saw him for the next 3 years!
Roar! Best anecdote ever. biglaugh

also you could get a passenger door window which most cars didn't have in those days.
Really? when was this? I know Ireland has a rep for being a bit strange but when I lived there most cars had a passenger window.
Edited to say mirror ! my neigbour though up till a few years ago drove a Fiat 124 with no back window so when he loaded up the sheep for market in the back seat they could stick their heads out....
Hoot. laugh

My first car was a Renault 18, despite the rust issues, electical issues and being a bit wallowy, it was great fun to drive, the engine was bullet proof and the seats were so comfy, had leccy windows, central locking and remote mirrors, which for a 1984 car was pretty good lol. I had it for 5 years, had so much fun in it, sadly it eventually succumbed to the price of getting it through MOTs due to the chassis being rotten having lived its whole life on an island next to the coast for 20 years! I would absolutely love a mint 18 or Fuego Turbo, there must be one hiding somewhere scratchchin

Got a real soft spot for most 70's / 80's Renaults actually.

Had a GTX 2.0 was painted Dark grey and silver with red wheels and a blue interior!!

So much better than a capri at the time - but oh dear had some serious reliability issues with it.
Used to pop the driveshaft on tight corners once leaving me in the middle of no where at night - no mobiles in those days...Turned out one of the gearbox mounts had snapped.

Then changed the entire fuel system as it would cut out on long runs over about 60mph but could not cure it even tried the breakers for bits of the carb but someone else had beaten me to it...

Then the rust set in - leaking fuel tank, most of the panels and don't mention the electrics. There was a strange burning smell when using the rear screen heater was down to using a PCB edge connector to handle about 10A which eventually burnt right through.

Despite all this really loved the car at the time, handled well (for the time)good mid range torque, one of the first to have remote central locking I think.

My Ex-Girlfriend always wanted one, but everyone I looked at looked 'tired' and this was about 1991. Looked old before their time.

Give me a Renault 21 turbo and I'll be a lot more interested.

They were the v v vroom Sierra Cosworth of their day, with slightly less horsepower and lots more garlic.

nice to see one of these survives, I had two (and an 18 before that) when I was a student, at the time its was amazing to have things like sports seats, 5 gears, elec windows and a fancy dash!

the engines were very rough and agricultural but pretty tough, magic carpet ride from the wallow suspension.

To put into context how great they seemed at that time the alternative was eg Marina/Ital, Cortina, Cavalier, all seemed so basic and bland compared to the Renault!

I think I'm a bit out of kilter with the general population this week. I think that is truly horrid. Only rarity in its favour, everything else is just shudder.

Imagine trying to get excited about a road-trip when you know you're going in that.

+2!!

Back in the day, when I was at Uni we had the communal use of a Mini in our house, and on a Sunday I normally took it up the garage to tank it and give it a wash etc.

I remember lots of different places with car washes said "No Renault Fuegos allowed" so I asked one garage owner why not. Basically, as hugo alluded to, its the huge rear window, and also the wiper - there were a number of instances of the big brush lifting the wiper and smashing it back on to the rear screen, breaking it, or the big brush pressure could break it.

A friends dad had one, not too shabby.
