RE: BMW M Division Wants A 1-series M

Not wanting to state the obvious here, but could they not just have branded the 135i as the M1? As mentioned in the article is has 300bhp, which is enough to pose a serious rival to the likes of the Audi S3, Focus RS and Golf R etc...
That's just it though, it's a rival to the Audi S3 etc. Unlike the Audi and the Golf, an M car should have more than just power.va1o said:
At the end of the day the M name is just marketing
It's hugely used for marketing purposes, and doesn't mean motorsport homologation like it used to, but an M BMW is significantly different to a non M. For example, for my car the M version has a completely different steering system costing a lot more money just to give it more feel, completely retuned the suspension, totally different engine and a myriad of other little things.True. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, they do seem to be gradually drifting in the wrong direction.
Perhaps that's unfair. Maybe they've just expanded into other sectors and the likes of the M3, for example, are as good as they've ever been. Personally I can't bring myself to believe that though.

I am A BMW fan through & through but even I bang my head against the wall & shout because they they are not building the cars they should be.
E.g. M5. The one with the 5.5ltr engine & the M1 etc etc etc
Lets hope they pull there fingers out this time because people get board & JUMP SHIP!!!

Sorry, I did say I wasn't sure. You're right: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/Search-Results... I love my Z4C, but I can't believe they lessened the steering feel to save fuel That's one of the stupidest things in automotive engineering that I've ever heard. It's a sports car for fk's sake!! Mind you, at least they didn't fit a ridiculous non linear rack like Porsche, I think that's equally as stupid...Edited by RobM77 on Monday 16th November 22:51

I've test driven two and agree. To me it feels over-assisted and numb, which is why I thought it was electric actually! Very accurate though (let's not get into the feel vs accuracy argument again!). I reckon the Cayman is my perfect car if only they'd improve the steering feel, remove the DBW throttle lag and allow another three inches of steering wheel reach adjustment. That final point grates on me.. Who's going to spend all that money on a Porsche if they can't even get comfortable? Take a look at the picture of Henry Catchpole driving the GT3 in this month's Evo Car of the Year to see what I mean. The list below shows the rumored specs of the BMW M Division baby car....

Yes it's true 1M's performance match the very latest M3 but it'll lose that V8 rumble ..i previously thought M guys would crammed that fabulous V8 the hell into it or reworked the current 3.0 turbo to a nice 400bhp-ish...but at least that new 2.5 M engine beat TT RS in terms of power and max torque also available at very low 1300rpm-5500rpm ...i'm happy though
lmfao @ spikey haired estate agent. You also forgot to mention pink shirt wearing dude.

Well here's my recommendation to "M" division;
It needs to feel safe and secure so we must start with a minimum kerb weight of 1655kgs. If the standard shell doesn't meet this target, feel free to fill the cavities with lead.
Start with a nice sporty Diesel engine, perhaps chipped to 352bhp at a heady 5100rpm , add a superduper "M Tec" body kit with de rigueur 21" alloys. Mate to a 9-speed automated DSG-a-tronic that can change gear before you've even thought about touching the paddle and promptly does just that. Remember the "POWER" button because I just won't accept a car without one anymore.
As for the chassis, well you can't even contemplate launching an "M" product without ADIFU (Active Drive It For You) and the One should be no exception. Why should I, as its potential buyer, need to worry about actually having to drive it!? That's just not what the "M" synergy is about.
Then, throw in all the toys such as LED uplighters that illuminate all "M" badges, Sat-Nav headrest technology and a plasma screen that greets you with the new "M" division mission statement - "Marketing" - "Making Money" - "Mumbojumbo"
Finally, set Nurburgring lap record to simulate real world driving conditions and start a never ending argument over the legitimacy of the time with Japanese and American rival manufacturers.
People, I give you the M 1-Series D. I'll have mine in Synergy Silver.
