RE: Driven: Ferrari 458 Italia
Discussion
from a design perspective the 430 was a very 'heavy' looking design with brutality but without the finesse.and the 360 will be quickly forgotten in time. however, this has both finesse and brutality which hasn't been seen since the 355 imho.
you cant compare this car to a porsche (im a massive 911 fan btw), its ABSOLUTELY light years ahead in terms of aesthetic design inside and out. v subjective i agree but its great to see pininfarina back to its very best. bravo.

as with the CALIFORNIA has Ferrari decided not to give a st about styling? it is an ugly half arsed looking sports car? Its the type of thing a student would doodle in a really boring lecture? the 430 was not too painfull too look at but this is burning my eyes and the rear end of the California is soo high it looks like a Ferrari styled pick up!
While I'm a fan of Ferraris, and will defend much of what they do, when I watched the evo and autocar videos of the 458 being driven I found myself feeling very bored. I felt like I was re-watching the Scuderia, 430, Stradale videos. I've seen this car before. It's just more of the same. I've become much more interested in the smaller engineering projects people are doing, like the dpcars, t25, M.D.I's attempt, and the LCC Lightning. I think the next interesting thing by Ferrari will be the lightweight (hopefully) F70, and if they decide to move forward with some of their unique engine designs, like their two stroke.
Sorry, the last nice Ferrari I know is the Daytona!
Lamborghini carried their design heritage into the future soooooooo succesfully!!! All the recent Lambos are hot as hell, quite literally.
Why Ferrari just makes awful look-at-me-cars that in addition get quickly dated.
Future classics? I would not bet on it.

Agreed. This new Ferrari is their best looking mid-engined car for a long time IMO. I'd go as far to say the best since 308/328.Gizmo! said:
Great article... I can't wait until I get to see one of these.
One question: what's the third exhaust pipe for? On the F40 it was a cooling air intake, but the 458 isn't a turbo...?
I was lucky enough to be on the 458 Italia press drive and asked the same question. Test driver/engineer Raffaella Simone told me that for various noise and exhaust emission requirements the engine uses only the centre pipe at low revs/around town etc.One question: what's the third exhaust pipe for? The car is spookily quiet until you wind the revs on and then sounds fantastic with the baffles open and uncannily like the 2009 Ferrari F1 car which should help owner fantasies a long a bit.
Regarding comments on the styling I don't think the 458 is pretty by conventional standards and, like most of us, better from some angles than others. And, of course, we don't yet know how the front will look with a big UK number plate slapped on it.

458 = great ass, ugly face
Obviously you either haven't yet seen Noble's £200k kit car yet or are struggling with the meaning of the word "ugly".....458 looks the real business to me, except it can't be any good because it doesn't have a manual transmission for that full PH experience.
I suspect most people saying this is ugly have the same concern I do about the apparent (from photos) mismatch between the front and the rear.
In photos it really looks like the two ends were designed by different teams, but until I see one in the metal (or whatever it is) I'll resist the temptation to say I don't like it.
Also, I saw a few Ferraris today and whilst not all are lovely, I can't see how the 360/430 will fail to be a future classic - Sure it's a little retro, but it's not ageing at all in my view (Although the California really doesn't work to my eye).

I have said before and will say again, California and Italia are both stunningly beautiful cars. The Cali has replaced the Spyker C8 at the top of my dream cars list!! Ferrari are really on it at the moment, coming out of a time when nearly everything they produced was boring to look at. Until now, the only thing that has drawn me to a ferrari is the noise, now I have a beautiful body to gaze upon to.In photos it really looks like the two ends were designed by different teams, but until I see one in the metal (or whatever it is) I'll resist the temptation to say I don't like it.
