Looks superb IMHO a country mile better than the latest E-class.
There is one possible problem - size.
It might be my eyes and the perspective on this picture (see below), but the new 5 looks bigger (broader) again than the outgoing model. Casrs have been putting on size and weight since the eighties now and I really don't think it's the right way to go. Aside from the environmental issue (that I'd prefer to gloss over), weight always eventually shows up in handling and the size of cars is already an issue for people regularly needing to wedge their motor into the UK's miserly parking spaces.
The existing E60 isn't exactly a small car either -- in some parking spaces you can have both ends overhanging the front and rear of the space. But what that picture also shows is how clean the lines of all of the new model's predecessors are, and how fussy the new one is. Not only does it have all those creases and strakes down the sides, but across the bonnet too. For sure, the E60 is a bit slab-sided, but I prefer it. In fact, we bought it because we didn't like the E90/92 when it came to replacing our E46 coupe. Now the 5-series looks like the E90...There is one possible problem - size.

I wasn't keen on the previous gen 5-series when launched but I admit it's grown on me over the years.
This will look a lot lot better in the flesh and they will sell loads.
Love the look if a little understated.
A bit more sober than the previous generation but this wont stop ity selling. The design of the last 5 series was slated when it first came out. It took years for it to grow on people.

I strongly dislike the tendancy in car design these days to use a "family" face, it's so incredibly bland.
1996 Audi A3, A4, A6 and A8? Look at them head on and you'll need to think hard to tell which is which.Ditto 1990 E30 3 Series, E32 7 Series and E34 5 Series.
A family face is nothing new. Infact, its very old!

As a statement of relative wealth it has (unfortunately) succeeded...
Which pit of envy did you fish that one out from? Is an upper-mainstream saloon really so offensive, especially when many will be the basic model? As for the design it looks to my eye like a BMW, although happily less "Bangled" than the last 5-series which was IMO horrid.

To be honest the E60 looked woeful in SE spec
That's a good point, most BMWs look a bit lackluster in non-sport spec (E39, E46 etc) - be interesting to see what the Sport model will be like, with more aggressive bumpers, sills etcI think this looks very good.
Fresh, and in line with the new 3er and 7er.
And whatever people say about it, there has never been a bad 5 Series, they always have top reviews and it will always be the leader in it's class.
It will be the best to drive, no doubt.
The styling may not be to everyone's taste, but come on, nor was the E60 - but look how successful that has become.
Much better-looking that the E60, and I reckon it will look 10 time better in the flesh.
The M5 will be a belter, although they will have resorted to forced induction!
And yes, in my honest, humble opinion, the E34 is till the best looking 5, and one of the best looking BMWs ever made. Still looks muscular, handsome and classy.

However, look at the E30, E32 and E34, they looked good even in basic guise!
As I predicted six or soyears ago, there are people saying they don't like the new and would stick with the E60, just as then people were saying they would stick with the E39. It would be highly amusing to find that these were the same people.
At least one person complained that it looks like a mix between the 3 and the 7. So, just like every previous generation of 5 Series then.
As for relative size, I'm wondering whether this isn't an example of what Father Ted explained to Dougal about the relative size of the toy cow and the cow in the field.
