I wonder if we'll get to see this used as an F1 safety car next year? They seemed to use a variety of other AMG Mercs over the last season.
I thought i read somehere that this is the new saferty car...
Yes indeed, although the guys at AMG are apparently having some issues locating the light bar thanks to the gullwing doors.

The rear pillars need something doing to them.

To me, they don't quite work as it's quite a large, flat area.

It seems to be crying out for a side window, but as I suspect that would not be feasible with the structure, a panel of unpainted CF echoing the window shape would do the trick.

Funny you thought it looked like an MX-5 because I was thinking more RX8 on steroids.

Technical it's the nuts but I think the design's more of a grower!!

Agree with the Z8 comparison. Like it though. As with the CLS, a Merc with a bit more character...

Not sure those ceramic brakes are standard are they?

I presume PH is going to review it when it arrives in the UK? There will surely be some contrast between the way it performed and felt on US roads and how it will perform and feel on UK roads?

It is a fabulous looking car though, from the photos it is not as vivid as say a Ferrari, it is more discreet and classy.

Very very nice.

I am left with a slight feeling that AMG could have done something more exciting in the styling department. The overall design of the Z8 for example is significantly bolder and sets the car apart from other mainstream offerings. Have to say I love the doors though.

I may be wrong but there is, iirc, a vulgarity along the lines of spaffing oneself...

I love it to pieces.

Love it.

TBH, when I heard MB were doing a modern version of one of the most iconic cars ever, I was dreading what it would turn out like. Looks like they've done a very good job.

A lovely car.

But is it another example of the best cars only being designed for short-arses !!??

Why the hell do designers still persist in making desirable cars that taller people cannot drive?

I hope I am wrong because like most of us, I have'nt seen the SLS in the flesh yet. But I am worried that this is yet another waste of time for anyone over 6 feet tall.

Yes you will... A friend in F1 introduced me to one of his mates who works for AMG at the Mercedes Benz World Day a few weeks back, he was going to be working on the F1 SLS Safety car the following day. Don't think it's common knowledge yet, but yes it will be being used next season.

Seems fairly common knowledge:

... Should sound very good going round in front of the F1 boys next season (it’s been announced as the new safety car).

Like what I have read about the SLS but passed one last week in my home town (in Switzerland)...and was thoroughly unimpressed with how it looked. Not a patch on the upcoming McClaren or Ferrari 458

Does this mean that the SLS cannot carry a roof rack for my Halfords roof box? Disappointing. I won't be buying one then.

I'm sure you can fit a tow bar and buy a trailer. hehe
