Many years ago had a Sprint which I fitted 155 section M+S remounds to for the winter. Snow? What snow? biggrin
Marks & Spencer will have to draw the line somewhere, surely to goodness.
They weren't just any tyres, They were M&S tyres...
Brilliant!

Best car for normal snow and slush is a good old-fashioned narrow-wheeled low-powered lightweight like a Moggy Thou'.
yes I remember driving mine around in bad snow and finding it more or less unstoppable compared to modern cars (which themselves would be 20 years old now).
Yep totally agree - Low power, low weight, skinny tyres, high(ish) ride hight.

Best car I found for the snow was my old TR7.

My best two winter cars were a Mk1 Panda (2wd, not 4wd) on 135 wide tyres, and a Cayman on winter tyres that were a couple of sizes narrower than the summer tyres. The wider the tyre, the more 'flotation' you get. A bit like tractors that use huge balloon tyres when they are spraying so they don't damage the crops, but then use narrow tyres for ploughing work.

Since everyone here is an expert, can someone explain what this driver should have done to avoid losing control?

>5MPH onto a slightly slanted road that was pure ice, and probably quite disguised.

And getting out of the car while it was spinning probably wasn't the best idea!

Listened to the people out of shot who were apparently warning cars about the ice, at least I think thats how the story went when this surfaced last year.

should have come off the brakes and rolled/driven very slowly over the ice. as soon as all 4 wheels were locked they had no control over the direction of their vehicle.

The OPs experience is the reason why I now no longer criticise other peoples driving.

2 mates of mine both had little bumps and I took great pleasure in taking the piss out of them.

One like the OP slipped on ice, hit the kerb and ripped his wheel off.

The other reversed into a van with a tow bar in a car park.

I was very smug until I managed to hit my bumper on a high kerb and cracking it in the process. I'd only had the car a few months and with only 10,000 miles on the clock it didn't have a mark on it. Very annoyed with myself I was and I still am.

So lesson learnt, I now think twice before taking the piss as Karma is only around the corner.
