I purchased a bottle of Green label for my step dad at Xmas. I was having a look at their site earlier and noticed they do 5 different labels or so and was intrigued by the different tastes. Can anyone shed any light on how the whiskies differ, and whether or not the more expensive labels are worth the money?

Thanks

I think:

Red: budget blend. OK but nowhere near:
Black: regular blend, bloody awesome stuff, I love it
Green: vatted malt, superb
Gold: vatted malt (I think), superb also
Blue: premium blend, I don't enjoy this as much as the previous three I mentioned and it's a lot more expensive.

Just a quick note from my blackberry on the train, I'll elaborate further later wink. (And maybe have a mini-tasting, just to help out you understand)

Thanks for that. Only tried the Red label to date, Black one is next (i hear it's one of the most popular blends).

Have only climbed the ladder to Black so far, but - for the money - it's lovely stuff.

That's not bad actually.

4 full size bottles would be about £250-280 so this is a good way of sampling them all! Will make for a nice tasting session...

Exactly what I was thinking, as it would be nice to taste the difference between the bottles.

Gold label is definitely a blend by the way, a damn good one at that. I think it's just Green label that is a vatted malt.

The Gold is sweet, spicy, very complex and soooo smooth. It's damn good.

I believe that Blue label is primarily old Royal Lochnagar and as many as 18 other whiskies (including grain)

Johnnie Black is consumed in huge quantities out here in Asia along with Chivas Regal!!!

Most any bar you go into will have at least 5 or 6 "private" bottles behind the bar!

Actually, it seems that they have different minimum ages (never knew that!)

Black 12
Green 15
Gold 18

No idea about Blue. It's often quoted as being anything from 30 - 60yo but I don't believe that laugh

Well, 30 at a push and maybe a tiny amount of 60yo... wink

Black label is one of the best selling brands world wide. Anywhere in USA/Asia it is the whiskey drink most commonly consumed in a bar.
