RE: Driven: The New BMW 5-Series

I get what you are trying to say but what do you expect they should do? Sit around and do what Porsche do? Agree Porsche cars have amazing performance but look utterly boring (to me), as the design hasn't changed for so long. I wouldn't pay a second glance if I saw a new 911 Turbo on the street.BMW have to change and evolve to survive hence the new designs. Personally I think the old E34 looked superb (with the M styling). It came from the same family as my 316i E30 (first car), and it stirs a lot from my childhood.
My old man also had an 525i E39 and that was a cracking car but unfortunately he had the SE model and it looked very bland. He also owned an E60 530d, but yet again he bought an SE model. Bland as you get.
However, put M styling body kit on all the above cars and they get transformed into something fantastic. (IMHO).
The truth of the matter is we simply have to wait for the new F10 to appear with its M-sport styling. I think only then we'll know the real styling of this car.
Either way I like it. But perhaps that's because I like to enjoy new designs and see them evolve. It just sounds as though many people who comment on this thread are stuck in the past.....
The past was 1000x more stylish, that's why. Modern cars are like blocks of lard. Far from being a Luddite, sometimes you just have to accept that design "peaks" and thereafter is destroyed by safety and legislation requirements. A design unrestrained by any legislative shackles is bound to be better and purer than the "modern car" with slab sides, not enough glass and little or no imagination.
On that argument, the latest Peugeot 308 must be the best car they've ever made and let's face it, it isn't.

Umm... he was talking about car design, I don't think Peugeot can fall into that category,
1. I refuse to acknowledge Peugeot as a car company anymore.
2. Doesn't really look like they design cars anymore either.
I don't get why people are so anti the new BMW designs (with the exception of the 5 GT :shudder The E39 M5 was a fantastic understated looking car (if it was released now, being understated it would probably be called dull by all of you.)
The E60 looks fantastic in M-Sport guise, and the M5 looks awesome, and it looks like it mean business.
This new one looks like it could look very good with the M-Sport bodykit and wheels.

And to suggest that some Audi/Merc/Jag models don't appeal to the sporting market is ridiculous.
No. To suggest I said that is ridiculous. It was said by daemon.

If we didnt all know the e34 was an m5 it would be an old looking BMW with some really naff wheels and a questionable silver bodykit. The e60 you've shown is probably a 520d (most are these days)
As someelse else has put, BMW has 'evolved' the design. You might not like the f10 5 but it will appeal to their target market and it will sell - for being an exceptionally good car.
Personally, i love the e60. I really really wanted to own a 535d M Sport since the first day i saw one and (so far) i've been lucky enough to own two.
If the right colour / styling / engine / wheel combo comes along in an f10 5 series and my circumstances permit, i'd certainly have one.
I'm going with Riggers on this...
"Away from the track, I'm pretty sure the 5-series will make an excellent businessman's express, but as for whether it could beat an E-class or an XF? I'm not so sure. The XF tugs at the heartstrings more and, well, I reckon the Merc makes a better fist of being a Mercedes than the BMW does at being a BMW. We're not sold on this car quite yet. But we haven't seen the M5 yet...

The SEs have always looked dull, appealing to people who like the A6 or e-class.
LOL - not at all! I wouldn't be seen dead in an A6 or E-class, but my 535d is an SE because I prefer the ride on 17" wheels with 50 profile tyres rather than the stupidly hard ride of the sport model with 19" wheels and 30 profiles, which just aren't suited to British roads judging by the numbers that crack and fail. The SEs are bought by people who aren't sucked in by BMW marketing.

I think the whole big sports saloon thing is over now,it's true that the new M5 will have much more power than its predecessor and blow it away on a 2 mile runway but it will be heavier and even less involving to drive when it really matters. You have to question if the new model is a bit pointless really?
Im sure if you took the above 315bhp M5 and threw it down a twisty road it would be more satisfying than any of the current super barges simply because it is lighter, rawer and more connected with the driver.
