Can anyone explain the mixing bowls in the bonnets on these new cars. I note the Megane has it too and it looks terrible IMHO. Is it some way of trying to circumvent the passenger safety minim height above hard points or something?
Perhaps the subtle curves on this car are more to your liking?

It's interesting reading people's first hand views and opinions on the new 5, and other luxury brands including Jaguar and, erhhh...Peugeot.

Having sold Jaguar (1999 to 2002), MB (2002 to 2005) and BMW (2005 to 2009), oh and Peugeot (1989 to 1993), I became fairly intimate with their respective brand values as well as individual model performance / reliability etc.

Bottom line is they all made some lemons during the time I was with them (X-Type, B-Class, X3 & X6) and equally some gems too (205GTi, XJR, E55AMG Estate - when it was working, M3, Z4M Cpe). The new 5 is certainly no beauty queen in those shots with those wheels and the SE bumper, but neither was the equivalent E39 or E60 until you upgraded the wheels. Having said that the M-Sport will look better, and remember the competition isn't exactly the automotive equivalent of Penelope Cruz. A6 - where? Sorry I missed it... New E Class - burns victim anyone? WTF are those rear arches about? GS - couldn't look more bloated if it tried.

Sooner or later some clever spark will come up with a miracle material that will enable new models to meet all the legislative requirements of the day and actually weigh considerably less than the model they replace, but until that happens we will have heavier and heavier cars, that by definition are going to be less involving to drive. Having said that, if I was unfortunate enough to have a 'head on', I'd rather be in an E60 than an E28...

Would I buy one new? No, but I wouldn't buy an A6, E Class or XF either. Why is that? Because (probably like a lot of the detractors on here) I'm not actually in BMW's target market for this car. If I was, then I'd certainly consider it. You'd be a fool not too.

I'll stick with the M3 CSL and Ford Focus Estate, best of both worlds for me, unless of course I suddenly start to do 50K miles a year again, mostly on dark, wet, over-crowded motorways, then I'd be first in the queue for an E60 520D / 530D Touring!

Oh, and while I quite like the general shape of the XF, anyone suggesting they'll ever out-sell the 5 by three to one is either delusional or an eternal optimist... The Hun's will continue to dominate fleet registrations in this sector, as they have done for many years already. At a manufacturer level Audi, BMW & MB all sold about 3000 units into the fleet market in December 09, while Jaguar sold 600 odd, and Lexus...wait for it...just over a hundred!!! Dealership profitability at these volumes...now that's another matter...!!!

For my money, Audi still lead the way for execs, although in design terms mostly.

Audi reliability is poor.

The new 5-series, like the 3-series saloon, is just "a car".
With the a6??

confused
I assume that you are referring to the first paragraph of my post.

Yes, I think the A6 is the best looking car in its class.

Actually, I think that's pretty much so widely accepted that it's actually what you might call a "fact".

Arguing otherwise is just silly.

Best wishes

Simon
I'd love to see evidence of all these people thinking the a6 is a 'looker'..

Its a big grey bland forgettable german saloon.

Agreed but much better balanced from a design point of view. At an Audi even the standard wheels do not look too small.

At all BMWs since the E34 the rear wheels always looked too small despite their effort to use a large rim diameter and spoke designs.

+1 but it looks pure and purposeful compared to the current range. Particularly the pre-LCI version that didn't get all the unnecessary buttons on the dash.

I'm still kicking myself for selling the lovely 3.6 E34 M5 I had, complete with original turbines and extended leather:

It went to a PH'er. Would be interesting to know if he's still got it.

This was the last elegant BMW!

Why can't they manage to put some of this clean appearance into more modern proportions. The new 5-series is just a lump with loads of unrelated lines all over it. No elegance, no class, no sophistcated appearance. It is just DULL!

What a disappointment!!!

Could any of you honestly say you rather have - say - the 535d version of the new 5 Series over an XF V6 Diesel "S"?

I know I couldn't.
No one could as there isn't a 535d version of the new 5 Series wink

'If' I was in the market for a car of this size class, then, I too would going to a Jag dealer without question.

The new N55 engine doesn't sound too bad though....as this is now being fitted to the 135i, so, just as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new 135i, it's such a pity BMW have seen fit to drop the Steptronic gearbox option in favour of the DCT, and I'm now being forced to think of an alternative banghead

As far as I can see you don't like the new 5-series either. That's promising.

Agreed!

Now, where's that 'know-it-all cock' (I've forgotten his name) that was on here about a year ago that was telling me (and everyone else) that:

"No E34 for was worth more than 1500-Quid etc etc etc...blah blah...lecture, lecture, cock, cock...."

When I said I'd turned down an offer of £8K for the 3rd from last (non-M5) E34 Saloon off the production-line on the very last day of production, that's totally unmarked inside and out (and I mean not even a stone-chip)...and still only has 39K miles on the clock?

Well, I've never got my local dealer chaps to check the full spec sheet...I don't know if the 'Individual' program actually ran on the E34?

I'm going to find it hard to ever beat the E32 that I had so really I'm looking for....that's the problem...I don't know what I'm looking for anymore!

There were a few Individual options on the late E34's if my memory serves.

Yours is a rare car being a 540i without leather and climate.

Congratulation!

This is stunning. What a nice car. And good photographs too, btw.
This is a nice car collection... Are the other 2 BMWs also in this pristine condition?
These are the cars from the times when BMW made automobils with style!!! (Not to forget the BMW Z1 here)
Unfortunatly they lost it all. Why couldn't they carry any of this elegant presence into the future?

I wonder, is this E34 your daily runner?

Many thanks!

No, the E34 had 39K miles on the clock when I first bought it nearly a year and a half ago. Apart from adding about 100 miles taking it to and from the paintshop and about 10 miles for an MOT and the photos that's about it...it STILL has 39K miles on the clock!

In fact, despite currently owning six cars (and even taking my 840Ci Sport to the Breakfast Club at Cosford this morning...a rare outing for it...shock!) I find myself without a car that I'm willing to drive on a daily basis at the moment so I've 'borrowed' my Mother's E39 520i Touring to drive as a daily car over the next few days.

I'm old enough to recal many 5 series launces and they all follow the same route. Gasps of disbelief when the car is first viewed, lots of bad press and 12 months later it's back at the top except of course at AUTOCAR or JAGUAR weekly as it's known here.
