I think the e60 is going to age very well next to this!
BMW do evolution, then revolution.

The e39 was an evolution compared to the e34.

The e60 was a revolution compared to the e39.

So the f10 is an evolution compared to the e60.

For my money, Audi still lead the way for execs, although in design terms mostly.

Audi reliability is poor.

The new 5-series, like the 3-series saloon, is just "a car".
With the a6??

'Bread and butter model'- £37k! Since you lot have had things like XFR's on long term blag, you seem to have come over all Vinnie Jones when it comes to the real world.
yes

The 520d will be the 'bread & butter' model.

The 530d is more, err, Focaccia and olive oil...
Indeed. The 520d is the big seller. And with good reason.

Well I don't like it. It looks like a car made up from cut-n-shut bits and bobs from elsewhere in the BMW range that don't really go together. Big bulbous nose from the 5GT, inflated back-end from a 3 series and over-exaggerated creases down the middle. Those rear 3/4 cornering shots look awful.

I think I'll be keeping my E60 535d for a little longer yet and with some proper (non-runflat) tyres on, it's proving to be a great drive.

Sad to say but I think it's been mostly downhill for the marque since the E39.

Then if BMW's dealer continue to demonstrate the kind of complete incompetence I've experienced over the last 6 months, I'll be moving over to a Jag XF, which as a BMW owner and enthusiast for over 20 years is saying something.

Don't doubt it'll sell like the proverbial hot cakes.

What the hell is going on just below the front kidneys though? It completely dominates the front views.

I find the XF bland, plasticky and gimmicky.

Also, no doubt the pics are of the SE, it always takes the M Sport variants to really bring out the best in BMW designs.

Much less interesting than a Peugeot, of course.

It's lost all its visual muscle. Look at those weedy, recessive wheel arches and the Korean back end. BMWs, like them or not, have always looked poised and, well, a bit 'ard. The latest 3 and 5 are visually weak. Out of proportion everywhere you look, and held together by weedy lines. Very poor design work.

Yer the front bumper looks really pushed up, especially the middle bit under the kidney grills that looks like its been forgotten at the bottom.

Did a really rough mock up (bored!), but IMO looks meaner.

That steering system sounds like that fitted to the Prelude in the mid 90s. That worked well didn't it? Or was it just Setright's glowing reviews that have tainted my view? smile
It was very fashionable in the late 80s/early 90s, just about every Japanese car seemed to have it around then, there's a whole list in the Wikipedia article

So now its official the lithe German made sport sedan is absolutely and completely dead.

Long live all of them:

all 5 and M5 series
all 3 and M3 series

Audi 80/90/100/200

Note to owners keep them as there will be no more like them. J

Hmm a rally prepared 106 or an ugly, dull german barge. I know which i prefer! Shouldn't you be busy grooming something?

How did you find the handling and performance when you test drove the XF?

I saw a silver 530 this morning and it looked stunning. Sure, it was a 51 plate E39 but it still looks great.
