Erm, what standard VAG FWD platform is the A6 based on?
same one as the Passat.
confused They don't even have the engine the same way around do they?

I didn't think any A6 had ever been based on the same platform as anything with a VW badge on the front.

It looks fine to me and will appeal to the businessman market.

It will, however, have mighty engines with killer power/performance/mpg combos that piss all over what everyone else can manage.

For my money, Audi still lead the way for execs, although in design terms mostly.

Audi reliability is poor.

The new 5-series, like the 3-series saloon, is just "a car".
In design terms? What design terms? Audi's designers make Porsche's look like the busiest guys in the industry. Take a passat, put a horrendously guaché grille on the front and BANG, you have the latest Audi.

Notice I haven't actually quoted a model of Audi there as frankly, they all look the same.

Indeed. And now BMW are copying them. frown

This car is great news for Jaguar, as it is no where near as pretty, or from what is written, as good a drive.

'Bread and butter model'- £37k! Since you lot have had things like XFR's on long term blag, you seem to have come over all Vinnie Jones when it comes to the real world.

if by bread and butter you mean base, i think you may be mistaken? how is a 535i base model, surely a 520i will be? which will be around 10k cheaper.

Of course they do. It's years since the Passat had a transverse engine. The whole reason Audi sticks to its compromise of using fwd in all its saloons (or 4wd) is that it shares platforms across the group.

i might be getting one of these myself next year. Would like to know what the ride quality/comfort is like. The problem with the e60 SE was that the seats were the most uncomfortable things ever invented, and not helped by run flats. You mentioned the RF tyres are better this time, but those seats look exactly as though they have been lifted from the old e60. Is that the case? And is the car comfortable to drive on motorways for long periods - in your opinion?

Meh, I'm sure it's a wonderful car and all but I really would have to feel some emotional attachment before spending that kind of money. Now where's that Jag brochure?

Just keep it and take care of it well, as there won´t be anything better for a long time to come.

Oh, I hadn't realised that. I assumed the Passat had a re-engineered version of the Golf chassis.

I think in essence that it does - a lengthened one.

It's hardly setting my pants on fire but then it's not designed to. I'm not overly keen on many of the new BMW models but this looks one of the least offensive looking they've released recently. Though that's hardly praise. All SE or comfort spec models in just about every manufacturers range looks bland and this is no different.

Another aspect of the 5-series cabin that's made a welcome return is a sense of snugness - both passenger and driver feel cocooned in a way that the previous 5-series never managed. You don't feel short of space - just secure.
Are you sure?

That looks awfully short of rear leg and head room to me.

yes

The 520d will be the 'bread & butter' model.

The 530d is more, err, Focaccia and olive oil...

I love it when people come into a thread about a barge and talk about weight.

Fair enough if it was the new Lotus elise or a Caterham kit car, but this is a barge.
I was wafting around in a 750i last week, so not bothered about weight at all really, except when it's totally fking pointless. 750i has a motorized boot, that I can almost see a point in. motorised airvents however I can't. It just strikes me as something to add weight and complexity for no purpose.

At least it's marginally less fugly than the previous iteration. Marginally. And at least it doesn't quite have the terrifyingly monstrous snout as the new 7 series. Every time I pass a new 7 series in the opposite direction I breath a sigh of relief that I haven't been hoovered into its engine bay.
