My first R/C car was a Tamiya Holiday Buggy, anyone else remember these? I seem to recall it had a driver who looked a bit like Burt Reynolds in his Smokey & the Bandit days! I think it had a 360 motor rather than the 540 that most had but as an 11 year old it still provided me with hours of entertainment! Last year bought an RC glider and sailing yacht; I am not too sure the wife would be too pleased if I came home with a R/C car as well. There's a slot car club near me I am tempted to join, they're small enough for me to hide without her knowing! I know most guys hide their porn but I am sad I know!

My Tamiya catalogue was probably my most thumb'd brochure I had...quickly followed by the Porsche brochure of the time and then the Scalextric book of track designs and accessories....

I never did have the spending money to get an R/C car...
Hornet
Grasshopper
Super Champ
Lancia 037
Subaru Brat.....
Oh damn, memories! That list is THE list if you were/are into your RC cars. I am pretty sure I had all of those at one stage or another (usually sourced second hand at car boot sales).

I think the Porsche 959 deserves a place on there, complicated little RC cars and prone to breaking a lot but boy did they go some.

I moved up to the Petrol Cars after that, getting my hands on the legendary "Turbo Burns RX"...

Why did I sell off that lot?!
What about the mid 80's Hi-Lux with selectable 4wd! The throttle stick on the controller had a sort of Ferrari open "H" gate so you could select forwards or backwards in either 2 or 4wd. Amazing - on what is esentially a 25 year old toy car.

They're stilling making them smile Have a re-issue Hilux behind me with the H gate 3 speed remote. Although the hubs do not lock on this, you can simply turn it into RWD by taking out the drive shaft smile

Both kit and full size are fantastic. want both

Got a Countach for my 16th birthday . never used it much , too fast (and ate expensive batteries), too crashable once you've spent hours making it . but a lovely thing to own . Must get it out of the loft and resurect it one day

I remember way back to the mid 80's when the Tamiya catalogue was 'THE' magazine / catalogue / book bar none to one, and at the time for a lad on pocket money they were hellish expensive.

I had the Quatro shown earlier, i also had the Ascona 400 body for it, they made a great pair and for their time where quite handy. Those where the days - my old fella worked most of his working life in the motor trade, as such he used to come home in some great kit from time to time, faves to this day were a Sunbeam lotus (Black and silver) and later one of the first SD1 Vitesses - at that point in time that was real street cred, well to me anyway.

Never had a Sand Scorcher, but I was well into Tamiya/RC in my youth. Started with a Mardave Apache, moved to a Boomerang (a cheaper Hotshot IIRC) before finally getting a Schumacher Cat, which made the Tamiyas look like the toys they are biggrin

Then I discovered girls and drink and quickly forgot about RC cars!

Me and a mate also bought a couple of Tamiya DTM cars in the mid 90s for a retro laugh, a 155 and a 190. Good times...

So true. I had a Cat as well. That and the Associated RC10 before it, were game-changing designs.

Anyone here race? I never really got into the buggy-racing scene but was into 1/8th stockcar racing in quite a big way.

Remember "Model Cars" magazine?

I do remember those, at least I remember seeing it in the Tamiya catalogue anyway!

This thread is bringing back some great memories and even though I have a nitro rc car today, it's the old Tamiyas that I love the most.

What was the 4WD RC10 called?

I loved my RC10, which was a replacement for the Frog which started the madness.

I remember the sheer joy of going from a 540 to a 22 turn double, all for under £12 and having to maintain the brushes with lighter fuel and cotton buds to keep it going as fast as it could.

Yes the Frog was iconic for me too.

A 22 turn was pretty cutting-edge for that day. I remember lusting after the 540 Black motors - they did a higher-power blue version and a super high-power red version.

Matched-cell batteries and good brushes were the key to getting maximum 7.2V performance.

Basically a slightly lengthened Wild Willy chassis - still could pull wheelies on demand.

It's how I learnt to opposite lock steer at the age of 13....

540 Black, didnt they do a Gold something or other as well?

They were about £25 whereas the Demon 22T Double was £12 and you could run it as a motor in standard class.

Seriously that doesn't sound like a bad idea, Paul. Go for a run-out in the big cars, then play with the little ones.
