As above I'm pretty sure it is friction that plays the main part in this theory. Apparently (and you can try this at home if you like) if you have a nice modern car with fuel injection you can save a whole heap of fuel by flooring the accelerator in every gear so long as you change at 2000rpm. The fuel injection will fuel accordingly and then the whole affair will get quite economic.

A friend of mine has done this in every car he has owned since he was 17. Of the six cars he's had, four have had to be scrapped due to engine problems. Two spectacularly blew up.

Anecdotal evidence, but I'm sure driving like this can't be good for the engine. Once I drove his Primera (2.0 16v engine) and once warm gave it the beans as we joined the motorway. Cloud of smoke out the back as it went past 5000 rpm. He went mental at me for "ruining" his car. Funnily enough after that the rough idle seemed to be cured...

CBR250 redlines at 18,000rpm.
I forgot about those little pocket-rockets. I thought the old CBR400 revved high. But the 250... marvelous!

It probably doesn't idle much below 2.5k. biggrin
Pah, Honda CBR 250.....

The Kawasaki ZXR250 didn't redline until 21,000 rpm yikes

I totally agree with you, car engines are designed to work best when driven at high revs (but not constant redlining).

I don't know, such 'one upmanship' biggrin

21k? Wonderful. What an absolute giggle when you're in the right frame of mind.
