Useful link that thanks, although I am not a fan of OEM Satnavs. The standard Bolero headunit has a SD card cabaility and with the iPod connectivity that I am having as an option, that's probably all I need to be honest.

As an aside I was out in the Merc GL yesterday and prefered to use Orange Maps on my phone (full postcode facility) rather than the COMAND in the Merc which doesn't have it. I would rather buy an decent Garmin/Tom Tom than pay OEM prices for satnavs.

I purchased a diesel 2008 Vrs Estate last September, 5000 on the clock (ex-Skoda) for 13K. Great car, buy one!. Getting just over 40mpg with 10000 on the clock, hopefully that will improve..

I'm going to have to order a replacement for my pre-facelift petrol vRS company car some day soon, and it'll be another vRS for me, I'm afraid... I can't see the point of paying tax on a badge and there's nothing else I can think of that will do the job of the vRS Estate for anything like a similar price.

That bloody silly chrome trim on the steering wheel is really gonna get on my tits, though.

That was a cheap car. Trade at 19,000 miles was £13,600, and they seem to be making their money.

It was one of the last PD ones, still a good buy though IMHO. The main dealer had about 5, all sold in a week!

Interesting thread this guys, have driven used pre-facelift TDI and FSI cars in the last week but had no idea you could pick up brand new cars for the same money!

Real shame you can't get the MFSW with the manual gearbox, it's one of the things I really like about my BMW.

Is there a quick way to tell the difference between PD and CR engined cars?

yep, and the chrome on the gear knob is horrible too, but luckily easily changed.

I was just reading the specs, and the DSG gearbox appears pointless.
Its worse on fuel, slower 0-60, slower top speed and in a higher emission bracket than the manual aswell as being more expensive.
I am surprised at this as in the Golf Gti it was supposed to be better.
That said my friend has a DSG GTI and hates it. He said in the snow it was even worse as it picks the gears and he couldnt get traction. (he does live out in the sticks)
Unless your disabled and only have 1 leg I really dont see the point in the DSG

My petrol vRS is coming for collection on the 1st. Black in my case, full leather, xenons, curtain airbags, full size spare, maxi dot, rear parking sensors, auto mirrors and wipers.

Price was very fair but not quite as good as dtd but I prefered to use the local dealer.

I drove both the petrol and diesel as a test and have to say the petrol was much better, it just seemed to pull better. We also thought it had loads of rear seat space, much more than the golf certainly and the huge boot sold the saloon over the estate.

Lowered Suspension Kit (part number ZGB1Z3071677) is about 138 quid plus you'd need to pay for fitting. Its a dealer fit accessory. You can fit this with your standard dampers, but I went one step further and got some Konis - unfortunately you can't get these thru the skoda accessory catalogue but lots of other suppliers out there ("awesome-gti" for example). The eibach's only drop the car another 20mm or so but it makes a huge difference to the look, the ride quality (improved).

Wheels - i got the dealer to organise painting prior to pdi. Cost 40 quid per wheel, I supplied some example pics for them to match. Makes a big difference to the look - a white car needs dark coloured wheels IMO.

Do they stiffen it up for better handling as well as ride?

Certainly something I'd be interested in, having had a Cayman and a Mini Cooper S previously I did find the ride very soft in comparison.

However, I call you on your inexpensive motoring claim. You could have bought a 3 year old Passat 2.0 TDi with some gadgets, got similar economy and saved £10k on depreciation Of course the VRS is still great value and I want one (although I'm wondering how good a Superb Elegance would be for the same retail price!) - I specced a Golf Turdo to 24k+ retail for the same spec!

Thats really good. I never knew Skoda had an armed forces scheme as I will be eligible for that. I know Ford do big discounts, like an ST3 new for £16995 but I dont fancy them much.
I may look into it again later in the year when I need a car. Its the Falklands for me tommorrow

I did pontficate/cogitate/consider/ponder the purchase of a used machine like a Golf GT/GTi, BMW 330cd, AUDI A3 etc etc. I came to the conclusion that for peace of mind motoring and predictability of running costs that buying the vRS new made a lot of sense. Three years warranty, hugely discounted purchase price, decent resale, good finance package and the fact that is a very good car swung it for me. It may cost more overall but hopefully it is worth it.

I found the discount via forcescarsdirect.com Very helpful and they access the discount via a network of dealers. Mine will be delivered through Hortons Skoda in Lincoln. The irony is that I asked them for a quote last week and they couldn't touch the best one I had up until then, There was a bit of conjecture about whether you could combine the generous discounts with the subsidised PCP finance, found out today via forcescarsdirect that you could.

I had an ST3 on the Ford Military discount scheme three years ago, I actually made money on that car! Enjoy the Falklands! I have done my time down there - 1990, 1994/5 and 2006!
