MG Asks Owners And Fans: Name That Road

Promised Longbridge plant regeneration is underway, and MG wants enthusiasts' help with road names

MG6 will be built at Longbridge...
MG6 will be built at Longbridge...
MG Motor UK is asking MG owners and enthusiasts to come up with the names for some of the access roads of a regenerated Longbridge plant.

Chinese-owned MG Motor UK looks like it could be standing by its promise to revitalise the famous Birmingham factory and to bring production of the new MG6 hatchback to the plant by the end of 2010.

MG is looking to rename a total of five roads, and MG enthusiasts whose suggestions get 'selected' will get an invite to the factory and the chance to be photographed alongside 'their' sign.

It's all a far cry from the collapse of MG Rover back in 2005, which signalled the effective end of British-owned volume car manufacture and led to the partial demolition of Longbridge.

Although we're unlikely to see a British-owned MG again, it's good to see that the marque's Chinese custodians seem serious about maintaining MG's British heritage and manufacturing presence.

If you want to get involved in the competition, send your suggestions via the MG website's 'contact us' section. Get a shuffle on, though - the deadline for suggestions is Friday 26 February.

The Chinese are outsourcing to England?!

More jobs and British infrastructure is never a bad thing. Can't say the same for the cars though, but who knows what will happen.

Headgasket Avenue.

I do really like the look of the MG6 though. Hope it looks like that in the flesh.

Some of you need to change the record. The MG6 looks great in the flesh, and the cars are well built and well engineered. But just keep knocking guys, keep knocking.

Yes, silly me, tens of thousands of jobs lost and all the IP sold to the Chinese for peanuts (including the MGF patents, accidentally) but the new car isn't crap according to one guy on the internet, and therefore all humour and the last 40 years' worth of reputation is void.

What's your point exactly?

One of you needs to get a sense of humour.

I'm really excited by this actually. I really want to see them make a go of it. Or at least build a solid foundation. If they could rebuild MG to a level where it's at least run over here, I could live with that.

Hope to see a number of good, new models over the next few years. The MG6 isn't a bad start IMO and look awesome in that picture. So long as the UK built cars will be at least a bit better and with a better engine/transmission lineup than the orange press car, they should do OK.

New car looks quite good, is to be built in Longbridge, and will revitalise an industry that the people of Longbride thought was dead.

So I wish it all the best. I find it pretty hard to understand why anyone would be so certain it would have a weak headgasket. I had no idea there were so many disatisfied customers of a car that hasn't been built yet.
