Every car on the road can break the speed limit, so we should be discounting performance as a bench mark...on a performance car website?

When the performance is such that it is so easily attainable that you don't even have to try to be doing illegal speeds, is when the added performance actually makes a car a bit flawed imo.

Have big power figures by all means, but this obsession with having loads of mid/low-range power too seems a bit odd. Half the fun of a silly car is the jekyl/hyde nature when you open the taps and let the revs rise!

I went and found this post from PH member "Flemke" which he posted in the thread "NSX-too slow to be taken seriously?"

I think it goes some way to explaining the point I am trying to convey.

I've put about 30,000 miles on NSXs.
IIRC, every single car that I have ever owned has, on paper, been "faster" than an NSX (or 'R') in a conventional sense. Nonetheless, I find the NSX to be a great car. Relative to most of the other cars, it's got the best gearshift, almost the best engine note, some of the best ergonomics, it's at the upper end of the range for build quality, and it's got a number of beautiful, quirky details. For an extended drive, it is probably more comfortable than any of the others.
The other thing is, how hard can one push a car in the real world of the United Kingdom? I think the answer to that is, "Not very". The NSX is more than quick enough to offer challenge, stimulation and satisfaction on our public roads. It does not do much good to have, say, a GT3 or 430 when you can only rarely rev it out even in 3rd gear.
The only criticism I've have of NSXs is that the clutch mechanism is crap. Apart from that, it's more than fast enough for public road driving. Anyone who thinks different doesn't know how to drive on public roads
I don't think think there will be much of a performance difference between an RS5 and a GTR on the roads as their limits are undoubtedly much higher than you can safely achieve.

Really?

I think they are just starting to get more exciting, more rear biased power delivery and better handling (apparently).

That's a valid point I understand what you are saying, speed isn't the be all and end all of the driving experience....but the argument prevailing was that this car would be as quick as a GTR..for me the GTR can do everything the RS5 does..but with better performance for less money..the RS5 is arguably better looking and has a better badge..but when you go on a track day the GTR will leave this dead.
The truth is this car will probably never be pushed to its limits, as with most cars, so are we now saying outright performance and speed are not that relevant?

I have a minimum performance criteria for cars I'm interested in. Once that criteria has been met, other attributes of the cars become important. For me, both the GTR and RS5 appear to meet that performance criteria. I know I'm not a good enough driver to use the full capabilities of either car, so the small differences at the extremes of their performance are mostly irrelevant to me.

If I was choosing between these two cars, it would come down to which I preferred to drive and live with. I'm sure there are people out there who would notice the difference between the cars' performance on a daily basis, but I suspect they are few and far between...

+1. The RS5 has been designed, I suspect, to get people to finally think of Audi's in a different light. Not only are they safe and well built, but that they can be a bit raunchy too..

That's a fair point, I don't think you'll ever be lacking in performance in the RS5, its a fine car, but the M3 is in that category, very close in performance to this its a much closer competitor than a GTR, I can't see this taking sales from a GTR, I think people who want the GTR will want that extra performance, that's just my opinion I don't own a GTR ,be interesting to see if any owners on here would be tempted into this

Something is not quite right here.

Its a 4WD V8 with plenty of performance. I should like it. It ought to suit me well.

Yet why is it that I could not care less about owning one?

There is something fundamentally wrong with the Audi brand IMO. I don't quite know how they did it, but Audi seems to have a stereotypical owner. Whenever I see an Audi I think the owner is also the kind of person that was the first to get a 60' plasma TV, the first to get an iphone, probably has a huge Canon camera with massive lenses ( that he does'nt really know how to use ) and plays golf. A lot of golf. And he's a member of Fitness First. And he cleans the car every week using one of those yellow karcher jet sprays. He probably owns a bluetooth phone headset. He thought Avatar was good.

He got the car on a PCP. In the old days, he would have remortgaged the house to fund the deposit.

I don't want to be that guy.

That's top grade stereotyping right there..made me laugh.

Can you pigeon hole a few more car owners?

Whats the obsession with this "cars in your profile" business. Are these "cars in your profile" verified, do you have to send your V5's to PH central before you can put them there? If people are really that interested they can click back through your post history and find out what you own.

Irrelevant.

I don't care what any tom, dick or harry thinks of me based on my car.

The point is he came to conclusion he doesn't want one based on a load of recycled, clarkson-esque, rubbish.

This is pistonheads, surely you shouldn't let others perceptions of you determine your car of choice.

Narrow minded in the extreme.

Nope, I still use an old Sony Wega as it works perfectly well, I got an iPhone a year or so after they were available, I do have a Canon DSLR, but I know how to use it properly (been a photographer for a long long time) and I have never, ever played golf. I played minigolf once on holiday. I am not, and never have been a member of FF. I wash my car a few times a year to remind myself what colour it is and I have never owned or used a bluetooth headset. Avatar was clever, technically impressive, long, predictable and boring.

I bought the car outright.

Sorry.

John.
