How can a Quattroporte be ugly?
What do you mean 'How can it be ugly'?

It just is.
It's the way it was designed.

I note you chose a black car (which disguises the cars lines and proportions) to support your point....
hehe
If it was a nicely styled car, you would have chosen a colour that highlights its form - like this...

ETA - sorry - got mixed up - correct picture added this time...

You've obviously not met Chris-R before then! let's put it this way, there is a reason he's not doing the Caterham academy!

I want one really badly even more so since i became a jag owner, definitely one of the best looking modern cars. Despite loving my XJ40 I'm glad jaguar have moved on both internally and externally. To me this looks like a great place to be sat:

I'm sorry but that wood looks cheap and nasty to me. Look at the wood Jags use to have, burr walnut, smoked ash, burr elm even.

That looks like varnished pinewood from an old pallet. In fact it looks very German in terms of layout and where the wood is located in the car, also with a tad too much American cheap wood look.

The dash looks better in the that colour mind, but I suspect it'll date badly, and still looks like a see of cheap looking dash.

Who are the people who were missing the wood?

I see a lot of (even curved) wood here! And it looks fantastic.
One of the nicest interiors on the market from my point of view.

But look at the wood - its horrid. Not like Jags of old.

And as I said in my post above, look at where the wood is. It's very much how you'd expect to see wood in a BMW or Merc, and its always looked ste in them too.

Yes, very poor rear end. Rest of it looks great but the back said "Scorpio" to me...

YES! They are both silver.

And we'll recommend:

They have a point. If you where to draw a pen outline, or silhouette of the rear, the lines are quite similar. Ignore the locaiton of the lights, just the main shape.

Of course from a side or 3/4 view its not true due to the more hatch style of the new XJ.

I just think its great that once again we are discussing Jaguar’s daring designs, how long has it been since we’ve done that?!!

Have seen a few on the road and in the right colour combo they look suitably different and sleek, the same can’t be said for any of the German rivals and I think that ‘different’ is the key in this market now which is where Audi have gone wrong with their new A4 or is that A8 I can’t tell?! Choosing a Maserati QP was always going to be a bit of an ‘out there’ decision with its typical Italian charm but the Jag now comes along to offer an alternative proposition whilst still offering all of the qualities that German car buyers have always demanded, strong build, reliability etc.

I think this is a stand alone product in a rather staid market (bar the delightful QP)

Supersonic.

Hmm...

Conspicuous and bold "design" is not a good thing in itself, is it.

A similar point was made on another thread regarding the E60 5-series.

Yes, is isn't a boring design.

Neither is Ann Widdecombe's face.

Not necessarily a good thing, though.

Ouch - something has been hit with the UGLY stick - at least externally (internals very nice).

Looks like the 300C crossed with a vectra and a peugeot rear end!

Bad move Jaguar

I agree it is cool, very cool infact, but the masses wont buy it, the biggest seller must be the S-class 320 CDI in this segment

I passionately hate the phrase "all new". It is mindless pseudo American PR bks of the worst degree. Either it's new or it isn't new. It can't be a bit new.

Bet the Jag's fantastic though...

I've been looking at that picture of the rear of the jag for some time thinking why is it just so ugly? For me it's just there are too many lines and contours that both start and go nowhere. They serve no styling purpose other than to break up the fatness of the rear. If a line is good why spoil it? I to think the rear will be redesigned sooner rather than later.

I think it's because the contours do go somewhere- the C(D?) pillar contour only resolves at the very rear of the car, where in most other saloons it has melded with the bodywork long before. I wouldn't say it's unattractive, though- maybe just a little too concept-car to age well. It would be ironic if it ended up getting XF headlights due to popular demand in a few years. biggrin

Muppet!

It's backward-looking people like you who have dissuaded Jaguar from moving into the 21st century before now imho.

Stunning interior - no, not "like Jags of old" and all the better for it too!

Noone ever bemoans the fact that Merc or BMW move their new cars' styling on with each generation?

I know, let's have a retro Jag MkX with airbags instead!

Love all the classic Jags, but this is 2010 ffs!

I think this is a stunning car.

I do miss the tradiotional XJ silhouette, but this will be a major hit.

Well done Jaguar - looking forward to seeing this in the flesh.

It is stunning in the metal. I doubt that phrase would ever be used for a 7-Series, S-Class or A8 (which is why I don't think those are the cars it should be competing with)

But to be fair they still do and have always looked horrid inside. Never seen a BMW interior I've even remotely liked and I've owned 2 BMW's.

Maybe that's the appeal for the buyers though, they just like dull drab uninteresting or ugly interiors. So when the car maker introduces a new interior of similar ethos but equally dull and ugly, everyone loves it.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I hate this new interior. It's just not really to my tastes, too much open expanse (especially in grey), ugly steering wheel with a big squished ball in the middle of it.

And it's not about not liking new. I do.

But some of the wood these days looks so cheap and nasty. Land Rover are no exception, they used to have some lovely wood in the p38a autobiographies. But the current RR and Disco interiors have nasty looking wood more akin to cheap furniture in a bargain store than a nice motor.
