It looks like they spent 95% of their time working on the front of the car and then realised they's run out of time to finish the rear. The black strip on the C-pillars looks tacky, the rear overhang is simply comical and the rear styling looks like the lovechild of a Citroen C5 and a Lincoln Towncar. Not keen.

I thought the styling awful after the first press release shots. However, after spotting a black (relevant for the C-pillars) XJ parked on Byres Road in Glasgow a few weeks ago, all I can say is WOW! It is a stunning, flowing, car in the metal; it's been a long time since I stopped in my tracks to take a look at any new car.

Well done Jaguar.

In a way, it doesn't matter that it's not stunningly pretty as the competition is all so damned ugly. I'd take this over any of the competition and I'm actually glad the old XJ has finally gone as it was becoming embarrassing.
yes Strange, isn't it, how bad manufacturers seem to be at producing good looking big cars these days. The S-class is a pretty decent effort but the latest A8 and 7-series are awful.
True. But most of the ugly ones are German, or Jap/Far East ones trying to look German.

Shame, I personally loved the "classic" XJ shape, think its a shame its gone and that more didn't love it.

I like the look of lots of classic cars but things always move on. Personally, I think styling has just got generally worse over the last 50 years, but I can understand why manufacturers feel the need to change things.

I can't think of any big saloons from anywhere which I wouldn't call either "ugly" or "dull" except the S-class, which is "OK" at best.

It's nice, but the rear is going to be a divider of opinion. If I was spending 100k, I'd look at a 760Li. The engine choice is also somewhat limited, although this seems to be a trend with Jag.
We are talking about the rear of the new XJ when the *whole* of the 7 series is up for an "ugly" award?

Im staggered that anybody can even think of whinging about the Jags looks compared to the latest 7series, S class and A8. I will grant that it isnt the original XJ6 shape pretty, but it is in a different league to whats on offer from Germany in terms of style!

Lovely front, fab interior and I am genuinely impresses that Jag have released such an up to date and genuinely fashionalble car, but the back makes me want to vomit!

I have to say I like it... apart from that black strip on the C-pillar, it just reeks of a manufacturing or paint problem they couldn't fix

Yeah I think you are right.

I kinda of like the look of the 300C and current Charger, but I agree they ain't pretty and do boarder on ugly. Same with the RXV8 although not quite so keen.

I don't mind the Panamera and think it takes a bit of unfair stick. It's certainly better looking than any BMW saloon. And I suspect if the 911/Boxster had never existed and the Panamera was launched people would love it's sleek looks.

The Masser looks quite tasty too.

Degustibus et coloribus non disputandum est. I think the new 7-series looks extremely nice, nice interior and wonderful engines.

Like the XF, the more I look the more I like. I'm sure that they look fantastic in the flesh.

What I can't understand is why they've chosen to launch it in such a god awful colour. I mean how many will be ordered in 'light metallic baby blue'? In a dark brooding metallic grey I bet this borders on Quattroporte levels of presence. So that's how I'll have mine, on a set of anthracite wheels. If someone could please order it new now I'll happily take it off your hands in three or four years!

I've seen pics of the Supersport in white and again it isn't a great colour choice for such a complex piece of design. And why are they dropping the 'R' line up - with the XFR and the XKR challenging at the top of their fields Jag would have had a proper halo car for each model line up.

I think it's Chris-R's new resolution to get a shot of him behind the wheel in every car he drives hehe

Nice review mate, and I must say that I do like that car.

Some of the detailing just doesn't work at all. The black section of the C pillar looks daft- like a doodle you'd do on a magazine picture during a boring geography class. The central air vents in the cabin don't work for me, either- they look like the kind of thing you'd get on an £8k Fiat.

It looks like Jaguar have done a fantastic job with the XJ. A much more interesting alternative to any of the German rivals.

Looks like it undercuts the rivals on price too.

They've moved the game on and made a great car. What's so hard to understand about that?

If you want to know exactly how the Jag's ride compares to the S-class (which is the benchmark for comfort), then I'm sure one of the nation's more esteemed publications is planning a group test as we speak.
I really hope not.

The nex XJ should be pitched against its more direct rivals

Quattroporte
Panamera
and, dare I say, Rapide?

If you want all the latest toys in a luxury saloon, you buy a 7 series or S-class (or A8), but it is unlikely you are really going to be that passionate about driving them, whereas the Jag and the Maser you would be.

Out on the open road, the new XJ delivers much of what makes the smaller XF such an engaging drive - which shouldn't come as much as surprise, because in spite of its extra size its aluminium-intensive build makes it close to the same weight as its smaller sibling (circa 2300-2390kgs)
The XF weighs 1820kg
The new XJ weighs 1892kg
