Out on the open road, the new XJ delivers much of what makes the smaller XF such an engaging drive - which shouldn't come as much as surprise, because in spite of its extra size its aluminium-intensive build makes it close to the same weight as its smaller sibling (circa 2300-2390kgs)
The XF weighs 1820kg
The new XJ weighs 1892kg
Absolutely right, my figures are official gross vehicle weights. (Not paying attention at 2am when I posted...) smile

No no no no no.

What have they done?
They've moved the game on and made a great car. What's so hard to understand about that?
Hardly.

It looks like a plop.

The back end of the car looks terrible. Reminds me of some dodgy Korean exec car. Those rear lights are rubbish I think.

Shocked to see that it weighs 2.3/4 tons. Is that what these cars are nowadays? yikes

It looks like they spent 95% of their time working on the front of the car and then realised they's run out of time to finish the rear. The black strip on the C-pillars looks tacky, the rear overhang is simply comical and the rear styling looks like the lovechild of a Citroen C5 and a Lincoln Towncar. Not keen.

Yup - first thought that crossd my mind when I saw the pics - "they've put a Citroen pic up by mistake".

Agree that the XJ was looking bloated but making a premium jag look like a cheap hatchback is not the greatest change of design direction.
I'm obviously an old fart at 33 but what happened to the "gravitas" provided by having a boot?

We've just added Jag's official 'launch event' footage to the homepage article. Great moving shots of the car in black - definitely worth a look.

All this nonsense about moving the game on.

Just because it looks different, doesn't mean it looks better.

Witness the Quattroporte. Beautiful.

Some designs are just classics.

Thanks for clarifying, but I think you should probably change the article - quoting the maximum allowable total mass of a road vehicle when loaded isn't the norm for reporting on how much a vehicle weighs and its very misleading.

Good article though.

DMN - how do you know? How many have you driven?
I was writing in terms of design and styling Visually the LS600h is a more composed and balanced car. The Jag has a fat rumb and nothing to balance it out at the front. Above someone mentioned the Lincoln town car and I think that is a pretty good rear visual comparison. Which gets me thinking ... I wonder if that's the kind of market they are after; fat Yank rather than svelte European?

I guess that some people just like different things eh? You dislike the new car, and I like it.

You could fight your corner all day long, but I won't change my own opinion, even though I like the pic you just posted too.

Love the front, not sure about the back. All the reviews so far have been very complimentary of it.

I just wanted to reassure those who say they need to see the XJ in the flesh. I live in Coventry and am lucky enough to have seen many on the roads in the area and a neighbour obviously works for Jag, as he has been coming home in a new Xj for the last month, hes had several different colours a light grey, dark blue and dark green. They all look stunning, enormous and full of presence and when people driving by see it, they slow down for a good look, which is good from a safety point of view because the car is normally being circled by kids on their bikes.
So lets hope Jaguar sell lots, if only for the children.

I don't get the hate for the new 7 series. Granted, the old one was very odd-looking beast but the new one is a big improvement.

From what I've seen I think the new 7er looks good - handsome, purposeful, nice stance, edges, stubby masculine nose. That's how I like them.

The new XJ is a bit of a mess IMO. It really does try too hard and consequently looks muddled and rather naff, esp the rear and side on.

Oh well.

Also agreed. If it had an Infiniti badge on it, they'd all slag it off.

It's a very attractive car; much more so than photos suggest (a black version pulled into the car park of a local pub a couple of weeks ago when I was having a ciggie outside).

I'm pleased that Jag seem to have made it good steer as well.

Top job.
