I can't see how the people responsible for the IS-F and that mentalist super-coupe thing can come up with such run-of-the-mill dross.
I think you need to reverse that statement a bit, rather something like thisShould Have Said said:

I suspect years of pent-up performance had to come out at some point! Hence the IS-F. I would NEVER call a Lexus a drivers car (or particularly interesting). I tend to call mine the washing machine. It is useful like a washing machine, but you can never get worked up about one and its not the most interesting thing in the world. Reliable as hell and excellent customer service, but dull non-the-less.I wouldn't call it dross though - depends what you are looking for. There are a few crap cars in the world, I wouldnt lump Lexus in that group.
Gah.
There is only one reason this is a Petrol Hybrid rather than a diesel. And that reason is that diesel is unpopular in the US - so unpopular that it was banned by many states - therefore Petrol Electric is the way forwards on the world stage.
My one ray of hope is that when the 1 series was launched, it only had a couple of dull engine choices, and now has a range of engines from the larger models haloing the rest of the range - 135i etc.
I am confused by the FWD choice as well.....Lexus has some very good RWD powertrains - the 2.2 Diesel has 400nm of torque, is competetive with the BMW and Merc units and is quiet and economical. A RWD 2.2 diesel 1 series rival would really make BMW sit up and think.
I guess if this gets Congestion charge beating Tax and low business Tax breaks like the Prius then it will be a good buy in london or for those seeking to reduce the tax trhey pay on a company car - a Premium Prius if you will and an unfilled market sector.
However with my petrol head on rather than my accountant head on I am appalled.

Unbelievably forgettable, bland motoring.
The funny thing is Toyota people in Japan would not see the difference. They honestly tell you the two designs are the same! I was always buffled and I never understood whether they DO NOT SEE the differences or it is just their attitude towards it.From this:

However, the result is just mindboggleing ultra UGLY!
BMW and VW will love it. Their competition kills himself.
Who is going to buy this? Honestly?

To be frank, I liked the concept and was bummed when I heard the new car wouldn't be available in the U.S. (we get the even more atrocious Hs250H). Now, I am only elated that there will be one less ugly car on the roads here.
What the hell happened? The concept looked brilliant. I mean, everybody knew it would be watered down a bit, but I never expected this!
And to the fellow who commented that parts of the U.S. banned diesels, where are you getting your info from? I'm not aware of diesel ever being "banned" anywhere here. The closest I could think of is that diesel with high sulpher content is no longer allowed, only cleaner, more modern Ultra-Low-Sulpher-Diesel is available, and even that is being phased out in favor of no-sulpher diesel and bio-diesel.
It is true that diesel is unpopular here, but that is because most people here have bad memories of rotten-egg smelling, smoke belching, noisy Rabbit(what VW called the Golf here), Mercedes and Volvo diesels.
