I like the look if done properly, if I get another car for daily use I'm tempted to get a few mates over and go to work on my kia, its worth nothing anyway so no great loss if it goes tits up.
I think if you do it you know its all about the fun of it and don't expect to be taken seriously, given a choice I'd take one of those over a barried car anyday.

Ive got an old escort on my drive way which is tempting to have a go at.. my wife doesnt really like the idea... she still thinks a 98 escort is worth ££££

As to the the 'Rat look' IMHO the Audi and the Golf are pretender crap and have been made to look that way which is obvious and trying toooo hard. The van is a class act and and has earned it's colours . A proper Rat doesn't need to 'Try' it is just 'Rat' if that makes sense.
As to the Rat Look.....LUV IT

I like the rat look in general, because it makes a good sleeper. However, the Audi and the golf in those adds both have ridiculous 'euro' look stretched on tyres which I hate.
I'm not digging the entire rust look, I think that a manky old saloon with spots of rust looks 'better' in that sense.
The rat 'look' originates from motorcycles which were just kept running as cheaply as possible, usually with the aid of a can of Matt black paint. The fact that these cars look like they were made that way deliberately means they look contrived. A more natural rat (with matt black paint of course) would be far better.
My E36 325 is slowly becoming a genuine rat... and I'm not even having to put in any effort!!

I saw a VW done (surprise!) to the degree of looking like a mobile scrapyard at a local car rally. When I first saw it I thought it was a barn find waiting to be prepped.
Then I looked more closely and noticed the deliberate damage and high quality of engineering hiding underneath.
Sorry, but it just looks like I dont have any money to maintain my car.
(Although I will concede that there is a lot of difference to doing a bit of 70's American iron to a 1990s Vauxhall Nova.)
Can you imagine a teenager driving that? Please pull me over Mr Policeman.
