That Audi and Golf just look rubbish to me. I think rat only works if it's a) an interesting car in the first place and b) as mentioned by someone already, it doesn't look like it's trying to be rat, it just is.
Someone on PH has got a fantastic looking ratty old pickup that fits the bill perfectly, but I can't find it anywhere now
Perhaps even the photos of it rusted away

I'm not a fan of either of examples shown, but it seems a waste of some classic vehicles.
The 'Rat Look' seems to caught onto too many brands though, and I reckon is likely to spread onto some rare metal. I'm hoping this doesn't happen, as this will no doubt see it lose value, although a recent example of a Barn find Bugatti (I think) went for a couple of million.
If someone wants to do it, it is up to them, it is after all there car. Personally, I can't see gain, nor the point in doing it.
Good luck to them.

I can't see the point of it at all. Really don't understand deliberately fking a car up then thinking it looks good. It should stay where the idea came from, the old 'rat rod' style cars - as in the old american stuff.
The irony is that the whole "rat rod" thing started with matt black or other colour satin paint, with hot rod guys proclaiming that this is how it was "back in the day".Well, sure there are plenty of pictures that appear to show hot rods in the 50s and into the 60s in primer/satin. But from what I read many of the old timers say that this was an interim step - they could fit new axles, drivetrains and so on, but paint cost money, so to make the cars look acceptable they just threw some paint on them. No doubt quite a few ended up staying like this..
In the 80s the hor rod scene was set ablaze by people like Coddington and Lil John Buttera, these guys were CNC machining parts - suspension arms, brackets, anything really. One of the big cars at the time was Billy Gibbons "Eliminator". Naturally this wasn't cheap, but what soon became known as billet was the look - as always people would go to excess - some cars were never driven, trailered to shows and then back to their heated garages, some, it was alleged didn't even run. The so called "trailer queens" were looked down upon - the owners said the naysayers were jealous, the "normal" guys said they were a waste of time/money. Anything with shiny billet was deemed a "street rod", as opposed to a "hot rod".
Possibly as a fight back to the trailer queens the "traditional" look started getting popular a few years ago, then "barn finds" and "patina" became the thing, to the point that people were building fibreglass cars and then applying paint/effects to imitate patina..
Crazy.
Genuine patina, like the truck above does have some charm and character to it, but to build like that, from scratch ? daft IMHO.
Then it all got a bit silly, guys in the states were throwing old bodies on top of chassis that were lethal.. some were undriveable and got trailered to shows (thus completing the circle to the high dollar "trailer queens"). Solid welding axles on to frames, floors and suspension components hanging below the scrubline and so on.. This side of it appears (thankfully) to be subsiding and there appears to be more interest in properly built, but traditional looking cars now.
I think the rat look moved on from the hotrod world in to the beetle scene and then on through to the modern VW scene. Its just stupid - the other day I saw some pictures of a brand new Nissan GTR getting vinyl wrapped in matt black, it looks stupid to me.
As always, it seems the modern tuning world is always one step behind the rodding world.
the 2 vans pictured above are the type i like, they look like they been dragged out of 40 years in a barn, but the neo-rat look, of acid stripping just looks so forced and fake it's terrible.

the nova and the corsa just totally fail at the original idea, with them half polished, and a bonnet that is artificially oxidised.
The Asrat would have been perfect if it wasn't for doing the same acid oxidising, but the level of detail like a fosters beer tap indicator stalk, and the Atari 2600 ICE are brilliant ideas.

I have seen a rat look E28 (I think) 5 series with a black bonnet and roof rack, that had a certain charm.
You have indeed. Though "Rusty" is now dead! Running that low for that long killed the shell. Before
After
even came with a super cool trailer

The last look was of a old USAF fighter. Which was my personal fav.
http://vimeo.com/9245342 for the video epilogue.
As for the Audi and Golf. The Audi works as it's not 100% st. The Gold just looks 100% st. But it could be saved if they fitted some super bling BBS Rs wheels polished to death.
