One thing I loved about the SD1 was the square steering wheel.
Check it out in the pictures.
Genious.

Ex Boy Racer said: Borrowed my Dad's early SD1 (Mreg) and took it to school. Lunchtime, 6 mates in the car, an indicated 135 mph on the speedo down the Evesham Bypass... until i spotted roadworks a mile down the road. Just about stopped but sat at the red light with smoke pouring out of all 4 wheelarches.
What a car. Dad never found out. An M reg SD1? They started on an R reg ('76) with the earlier pre-prod model being an "N"They finsihed on a D with some stragglers being an E reg (1987-'88) so an M reg is unlikely. Incidentally, I DID see someone (JOHNSPEX)refer to it as an "SDi", which pains me deeply. Most will know that it was Specialist Developments 1. Furthermore, there was an SD2 & an SD3. The SD1 here is a 2600 Vanden Plas as the run-out models were limited to: 2300, 2600 Vanden Plas & Vittese. This particular model should have grey alloy wheels (VP only) and not the silver ones (S & earlier SE). The output of the later 2600 engine was backed off to 123bhp (Series 2) with the earlier Series 1 engine being 136bhp.

Wasn't the SD2 the one that looked like a Citroen BX and the SD3 became the Rover/Honda 216/213?

Why is it these SD1's I always used to see fat peopled riving them. I guess most fat people now drive 4x4's to carry their extra mass, lol. I loved to see the police cars of these back in the 80's.
Why was there not a saloon version of these.

Can't believe some people don't like the SD1 being SOTW - its RWD, great to look at and proper old school. What is there not to like other than some sloppy initial poor build quality?

Someone must be able to link that Metro with a HRH - c'mon... can we make this a ph mission-find the royal who had the metro! Erm, I know. Princess Diana had one, certainly. She's also the sort who'd call it 'Vicky' as well, unless there's something about Britain's longest-reigning monarch we didn't know.

Diana's was red apparently.
Would it be a total crime to buy this as a shopping car?

[/quote] Isn't that the whole point of shed? otherwise it would be easy for them to buy another Mondeo or Mazda 626 each week - but where's the fun in that? I drive a Mondeo Tddi (yeah i know, don't say anything!) because it's cheap, reliable, and fits the kids in - doesn't mean i ACTUALLY LIKE IT! Haven't owned a car i liked since i had to part with my Ginetta G26 - now at sub-£1000 that's the sort of car that would fit nicely in Shed territory! see: http://www.motorbase.com/profiles/vehicle/picture....

CampDavid said: Would it be a total crime to buy this as a shopping car? Thats what I would do with it, kind of bangernomics but knowing when it ran out of life you could sell it on car and classic and someone would pop up with the £500 you paid if you waited long enough.

You do realise that these where made at probably the worst time British Leyland. Strikes, huge financial cuts and the likes. A lot of them did have shoddy build quality. Still a great car though.

Do you want to take that chance? I find it amusing how some people on this site view trim dropping off, rattly panels and the odd simple niggling mechanical problem here and there with the same sense of impending dread that a mountaineer, scaling K2 solo, might look at a length of heavily-frayed climbing rope.

Only applies to the ones from the seventies, surely? This is a 1987 car...

I too dreamed of my Dad owning one of these. I lusted after a Trident green SD1 V8S. A special edition made on the MKI SD1 base before they brought in the VDP. It came with gold alloys and teddy bear beige interior - I think the seats made it to the RRover Vogue.
I remember the first time I saw one of these - and I fell in love instantly.
The boy in the next road to me was the grandson of the guy who owned the village BL dealership. A little old man.
One summer - I must have been 6 or 7 so around 1976/77, a silver SD1 wafted up to the house. My friends Granddad got out, the doors had lights in them! I was hooked.
Those were the days when people left keys in cars, and he was more than happy to let me and my frined clamber all over it, trying out the electric aeriel and things. We had an older friend, who truned up on his Chopper to have a gander. He worked out how to open the bonnet but we never managed to get the boot open I recall.
God what a car!
