Love it,

Before I had driven a 4wd car, I was one of the RWD rules all brigade and drove a BMW. I Test drove a 400bhp S4 and loved it, then bought it, then made it faster! now I wouldnt want to give up the 4WD, as said in the artical, it just makes it brilliant to drive fast, you can get the throttle on so much earlier in the corner, and it just digs in and goes round.

As with everything, people follow the leader/journo (Audis understeer, RWD is better.) and then just repeat what they have read... Go out and find out for your self... you might be supprised.

Looks like David Sutton Motorsport Museum in Daventry to me....

Last time I was there (a few years ago now) they had a brace of 037's in various states of disrepair/restoration.....very cool stuff

Childhood dream car for me - I had the matchbox works rally car toy it was my absoulute favorite - A late 20v is simply to desirable for words in my mind -
I remember my dad's mate had a B2 model Audi 90 2.2 Quattro and that was closest I could get to one at the time! made the right noise and had 4wd though!
Amazingly speaking with him last year about it he said he turned down the quattro coupe (not a ur)for the 90 - a decision he deeply regrets to this day.

Stop talking s**t! You obviously don't understand the history of these cars at all. You seem to forget they won the world rally 4 years in a row!

I particularly remember a damp WRC rally in New Zealand, the short wheel base Quattro Sports popping over the crest of a hill, huge vortices of spray spinning viciously off either side of the rear of the car, then charging down a long straight undulating piece of narrow country tarmac at probably a little north of 150mph, past me standing just a few feet off on the grass, and through the end of the stage perhaps 200 yards further on - and the whole spectacle accompanied by the magnificent growl of those engines! Truly a golden age in motor racing watching Mikkola, Mouton, Rohrl, and Blomqvist pilot those machines.

just digging in and going around doesn't sound like fun to me!

In my experience the most fun 4wd systems are those that distribute more torque to the rear. The more torque you send to the rear, the more potential there is for balancing the car on corner exit. Ultimately you end up with rwd being the most rewarding to drive.

Well spotted. It was indeed at David Suttons Rally Museum. At the peak it had approximately 40 of the best rally cars from the 70's & 80's... and some interesting race cars as well (037's, S4, T16, RS200, S1 and of course the very best Mk1 & Mk2 escorts around). I worked there for 2 years as works experience while at uni - working with Stig/ Martin Rowe on the Gp N world champs. I also helped John O'Connor a little with rebuilding the Quattro Sport S1 Chassis 001 (search google for Shalco - Audi Quattro S1), It took david over 5 years to find all the parts and john o'connor 5 years to build it! I will post photos when i can find them wink

Like I said, just see what you prefer, i find it much more fun being about to give it a bootfull and fly round.
Its definetly better on the road, and you can have fun whatever the weather!

And they arent has hard to make power oversteer as everyone seems to make out, its just really progressive.

hanks for the reply on the david Sutton photo. While I recall, the Audi Centenary celebrations in Goodwood and esp Ingolstadt had a huge display of their competition quattros on show and being driven around the town, most notably by Walter Rohrl (legend).

As an aside, I drove an RS2 on sale at VAG Leeds back in 1993 and the sales guy though he was the bees knees with a very superscillious attitude. After the drive, I mentioned the 6-speed box and higher turbo band made driving the car harder work than my quattro (admittedley with a 285bhp chip upgrade but mapped more for torque) and he was quite cheesed off as he was looking for his £49995 asking price and someone with more money than knowledge...The handling was also similar to my Audi 80 V6 Competition ie like a boat at the front end. Nothing at that time touched the quattro. I also agree that the AtoA prog is a bit of a joke - and I also believe it was sourced from AM Cars with some modn work so they could spin it? Like they had to fit slicks on the A8 in Ronin so they could spin that...

I had the pleasure of meeting renown quattro specialist Adam Marsden (from Somerset www.amcarsquattro.co.uk) at a regularity ice rally in France in February. The quality of his Mikkola rep quattro needs to be seen to be believed. Adam is a top bloke who is the oracle on all things quattro. Pictures of his Mikkola rep can be seen in my photo montages of the Rallye de Neige et Glace here

Didn't Audi buy the Sutton collection, or the Audis from it when it was up sale?

The Quattro was winning rallies in the 80s and elections in 2010?

I wouldnt go near Madam Arseden or his set up with 'your' barge pole, let alone mine.....I would love to explain but i would break the rules of PH, which i do not want to do.

In 1994 to 1995, I was privileged to own an 1982 x-reg Quattro, in Alpine White. Great car that I wish I'd kept.

I know the feeling !

I'm, not usually one to suffer from marketing or brand loyalty, but after watching the original Quattro's on the RAC rallies in 1983/4/5, I had to have one, so in 1987 I bought my first Ur-Quattro and ran it for 100,000 miles. Loved it. Still miss it.

Same thing happened with Lancia's and even the RS200. To this day I still tool around in a discrete looking RS6 Quattro with an unfeasibly generous amount of BHP. Very addictive it is to. After reading this thread, I found myself scanning the PH classifieds for a nice red or white example and coming up reasons to justify it ontop of everything else !
