Isnt the Z3 a 2.8??

As for which is best for you, it really depends what you are after. The MX5 is a very capable everyday sort of car. Doesn't really do anything wrong and should be fun. But by the same measure it's not massively striking at anything either. Ok it handles nice. But it's not that quick, doesn't sound a that great and looks ok rather than stunning.

A 2.8 Z3 is a different performance league really. A lot faster and nicer sounding and arguably better looking.

Drive both and see what you prefer.
Later Z3's came with the 3.0l engine (think post 2001 IIRC)

The 2.8 is not so powerful, the 3.0l not so restricted at birth, however as mines been modified with the usual bits, it's got similar power as the 3.0l's, hence the comparison.

Absolutely fine.

The later mark models are more refined and better on the motorway, but they're all generally ok places to be, either top up or down. The heaters are like furnaces, so top down in the winter is more than doable. Boot space is adequate, even better if you remove the spare wheel - the MX5 was designed to take 2 golf bags.

The mx5 is a great car I have owned 2.

I was out in the Elise at the weakened driving in the peak district and more than once I thought, "I wish I was in the 5" the Elise is better but there is something just so compelling about the 5, handling, amassing gear change, an engine that loves to rev and all this happens at speeds that legal.

Same time at the docks later? You bring the marigolds and secateurs this time.

Depends on the model, but on the whole they are fine.

My Mk.1 S-Spec has Bilstein suspension which gives a hard ride so around town and on motorways it's a bit compromised. Then again, my dad's standard Mk.2 was fantastic - great ride, fine on the motorway, and still fun on the twisties!

Just bought a MK1 MX5 and there's no way on the planet I'd swap it for a Z3. Drive both and you'll not only have a very easy decision but several thousand pounds in the bank. I saw an R-Limited for sale on autotrader the other day with only 56k on it for £2600.

As we discussed. With things progressing like this, it won't be called a "hairdresser's car" for much longer.

Nope. Cos' if there were, I'd be driving it.

"Don't mess with me ?" - Are we talking about the BMW Z3, or some other car I've missed ?!
I was wondering that as well. I always thought the Z3 was for the hairdresser that likes his ladies sporting a strap-on.

I have had a MX5, not had a Z3 to compare the two, but I had a Z4 for 12 weeks.

Get the MX5.

What cars have you driven or owned previously?

Also I'm not convinced they are so far apart. Sure the Mazda is fairly light and very well balanced and its low HP makes exploiting the handling all the easier.

But I'm not convinced the Z3 is as wet as some are making it out to be, and I'm sure the extra grunt would most of the time make up for it.

So it then comes down to what you want and what you are after.

Making a guess on the price range, there are other open top sports cars that I suspect might be in budget:

-Toyota MR2 MKIII
-MG F
-Lotus Elan M100
-Classic MGB
-MB Midget
-Triumph Spitefire
-Triumph TR7 V8
-TVR 350i
-Corvette C4
-Fiat Barchetta
-smart Roadster

Remember with the classics it's probably possible to buy a "modernised" or improved version these days, either running a V8 or more modern powerplant, so could well be quite comparable to a newer car.

Sounds about right, although you might do a bit better if you're not fussy about the leather. For example:
