You may have overlooked beauty and comfort and plumped for the M6 with it's V10.
I find the M6 to be a very comfortable cruiser. Unlike much of the BMW range it's not got run flat tyres and with the suspension set to 'comfort' the ride quality is very good indeed.

On the 'beauty' point I'll have give you that one.
Granted, although a suspect a Merc, Jag or Maser would be smoother still. I like the M6, looking forward to the next one.
I'm sure I read that there wasn't going to be another one and that BMW were going for a true sports car (to complete with R8, 911 etc) rather than a GT.

Leaves me utterly cold I'm afraid.

It may drive beautifully, but I couldn't bring myself to spend money on anything that ugly.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

(Somewhat apt looking at your car history too! wink)

Lol, yep, you've a point there, but the majority of my car history is cheap cars... I'm more forgiving of ugliness when it's cheap!
If this X6 was 8k not 80k then I'd be more enthusiastic!

That sounds appealing to me, shame it wont have the v10.

It's a fair point in that the car is very ugly. However I chose one since it's a 500bhp+ car that I can use for everyday duties in much more comfort than say a 911 provides and which is still very capable on twisty b-roads. It's well made with loads of toys and the real big upside for me is that I can take it to clients and it doesn't draw the attention that a DB9/XKR/911/R8/GTR would.

If BMW had managed to make the thing stunning to look at it would IMVHO have been a real hit and value retention would be much better.

I wouldn't be seen in one! They're driven by stereotypical wannabees.

Nice car, my favourite BMW but why o why does everyone go on about the "if de restricted 205mph top speed" When the V10 M5 was launched all the motoring press and tv programmes continually bleated on about this but guess what? They are restricted to 155!! Rant over - as you were, sorry,
Gary
unless you get them derestricted.

So, what is your point?
I thought my point was quite clear, they come from BMW limited to 155mph, to get them to do more than that you have to tinker about with them the same as any other number of other performance cars would if you did the same, do AMG sell their cars saying if you electronically mess about they will go faster? My point was loads of cars would go faster with "chip tuning" but people choose not to talk their cars up on that basis thats all,
Gary

Most AMGs are similarly limited. Saying that "any other number of other performance cars would if you did the same" is utterly misleading as that in most cases requires tuning work. All the BMWs require is a programming change in the ECU, not a remap, just removal of an artificial rev limit.

I was just wondering....

Presumably you don't pay for these machines (Garlick's impulse purchases aside) - if you do then I'm becoming a car journalist because the salary is clearly bonkers - do you have to pay for the petrol or do you get a petrol card? Is there some contribution from the manufacturer?

I'd just like a bit of disclosure as to how this all works, it's been bothering me for some time!

I would have thought even fuelling this monster would put some strain on most peoples finances!
It certainly does drink fuel - or at least mine does. The car would be courtesy of BMW and the fuel on expenses. I think these guys do it for the thrill of driving some great machines. If they could afford one themselves they probably wouldnt bother writing about it!

Not that we tell anyone we can't afford it when we're out showing off... smile

In city driving I get about 13-14mpg and on a motorway run, with no traffic to Heathrow and back without exceeding the speed limit, I get 25mpg.
Mine is the older 500 engine (car is an 06), what are you getting on your clk?

What sort of MPG are you getting in your CLS kazino? I've just acquired a CLK with the same engine.
