Well what can I say.

I first saw a Mazda MX-6 in the mid 90's and thought at first that it was a Ferrari due to it's awesome looks.

The car was red, of course.

My ex-partner bought a very good condition 1993 Red ATX MX-6 ( Automatic )in 2002 and it was a wonderfully reliable car. We went to Le Mans in it together that June and to other race meetings. When he was given a company car in August 2003, he lent it to me and I fell in love with it totally.

Then in 2005 I spotted a 1997 MTX ( Manual )MX-6 in Noble Green II at my local Mazda dealer that was a one owner and had covered 93K. It was kept for most of it's life by the Brit owner in Portugal and was rust free underneath. So I bought her for £3995 with their 3 year warranty. It was the last MX-6 this particular dealer retailed and it was already an 8 year old car too.

1997 was the last year that the MX-6 was made and my car has the 16" Speedline Wheels which give a better ride and has Aircon, Grey Leather interior etc etc.

Visually in my opinion it is one of the most stunning coupes ever made. It still looks fresh and up to date as it has classic lines like the Jaguar XK8.

She drives beautifully is incredibly quick and will see off most cars up to it's 140mph top speed.

The Mazda engine is very smooth and quiet and will do a quarter of a million miles easily providing that the oil is changed regularly (every 3K to 4K).

Wherever I go, other road users stop and stare at her and wonder what she is as they are now very rare in the UK.

I have driven all manner of cars from Aston Martins to Ferraris ( see my profile ) but this is overall the finest car that I have ever owned or driven.

She puts a smile on my face every time that I drive her.

Nice, but despite it's slightly odd moniker, I always preferred the looks of it's sister car, the Ford Probe. Had a look at an MX6 exactly like this one (as well as a Bluey/Greenish Probe), but they were both in really tired nick as far as the interiors went, so they were left on the lot. There were a lot of sheds that day (if anyone is from Aus, I was at the notorious CarCity), ended up getting a Volvo.

I had the 2.5 Probe many years back. If you could overlook the name, the wrong wheels being driven, the name, the colour (white), and the fact all my friends thought I was a tt... it was a reasonable car... and it had pop up lights.

finally got that off my chest....
At Ford HQ it was kindly referred to a the 'Prick' and if you were driving one as a Management Roll car you 'Must have done something seriously wrong' wink

I like these but why is it that the sister "Probe" is so reviled in comparison - basically the same car.
Silly name, Essex image, lame four cylinder engine on the base model...
..Alan Partridge...
Dearth of a Salesman. One of the funniest things Steve Coogan ever did. At the time I had Boss suits, a Nokia phone, a sales job in IT and a Nissan 200SX. As far as my non-car mates were concerned it looked like a Probe and I WAS Garteth Cheeseman...There was one guy worse off in my office - he actually had the Probe V6 too.....

"Oi! Get off - it's a 24 valve...."....etc

I'm still in IT sales and I do still reference some of the lines in it. Brilliant piss take.

Under 17 Car Club! One of the greatest organisations to walk (drive?) this earth. Deffo up there with the Suffragettes and the ANC.

Wish more people had a chance to do this, should be mandatory before taking to the road! Several thousand hours experience, plus advanced car control and skid pan driving should be the criteria for obtaining a license, not this eco-driving, parallel-parking rubbish that constitutes the 'test' today.

p.s. Nice car...

Hi Zircon,

Yes the Aston Martin DB5 & DB6 were lovely cars but somewhat agricultural compared to more modern high performance cars and the Ferrari 512BB was incredibly fast.

However they are not day to day cars and early Ferraris were not known for their reliability......;)

So this is why overall I prefer the Mazda.

However I am sure that there are other cars around that I have not driven and are very nice to drive and own too.

Heck I am giving my age away now !!!

Nice charming car. It's not a geek's wet dream like a Corrado VR6 or 200SX but personally I like it for that. At this price point it probably makes for a better car. Stand out point is the fantastically smooth and sonorous V6 which for me is one of the best sounding of the '90s. And I believe those wheels are steel wheels cast to look like alloys? I seem to remember reading that back in the day and being surprised.

VW Corrado - 1
Mazda MX-6 - 1

That's fairer I feel, as they are both great cars and as my late father used to say about cars " Comparisons are odious " !!!

Hiya,

Nope the 205/55R15 x 6 1/2JJ wheels fitted to the earlier cars were alloy, I can assure you.

I used to clean my ex-partner's car that had them fitted, so I should know.....;)

See below

Cheers

Paula

PS. Totally agree with you about the V6 engine. It's outstanding.

I've had both a Corrado G60 and an MX-6 and much preferred the Mazda. But that's just a personal opinion.

Blimey, I remember that article about the underage driver track days and also the feelings of bitter jealousy. Why wouldn't my dad let me attend in our vauxhall carlton estate? So unfair. Bit of a jellymould of a car though. Wouldn't get my vote I'm afraid.

I'm an MX6 owner myself and I think they're fantastic cars- they're so comfortable and hold the road incredibly well. They also roll surprisingly little for a car of this size when being taken for a good thrash down a country lane. The V6 sound is amazing, too.

I personally think the car looks a little odd, but I still like it overall. As a few people have said, the car is fast, even though there are much quicker things out there. They can be a little thirsty, too.

For those ranting on about the Celica, 200SX and the Corrado, you must bear in mind that £1000 is pretty much top dollar for one of these- a top spec one with low mileage and in mint condition is unlikely to see anything above £1200, whereas the other cars can go for silly money for the higher spec versions. Basically, while the Celica may be a better car in a lot of ways (apart from the sound), a £1000 MX6 will be a far better car than a £1000 Celica GT or £1000 Corrado VR6.

Morning Guys,

Here is a link to a Mazda MX-6 that was raced by Piers MacFheorais at Mondello Park last weekend.

This guy can drive and I love the way that he safely sorted out the pesky Peugeots in video one.

Unfortunately sticking rear calipers ruined his chances.

In fact he is a fantastic race driver in a great car, totally respectful and safe.

Here's the onboard footage...

PS. Here's some fotos of his car
