Just a general observation, but anyone who does well for themselves seem to get done down, and hated by everyone else? The amount of times you hear people saying stuff like " he's got a Ferrari/Porsche etc etc" so he must be a C**t, or other such nice things is depressing. The Phrase "Rich C**t" seems to get used a lot as well.

It just seems to be the mentality of it's far easier to drag someone down than go out and achive yourself?

Obviously there are exceptions to the rule for people who are born into serious £££ and act like complete knobs (Hilton Girls anyone?), but generally if you have worked hard and made a good living, IMHO you deserve everything you have worked for.

Unfortunatly I am in no way well off, but I am always working on bettering myself. I just have to work on the getting rich bit now laugh, but just wondered if anyone had noticed this attitude recently?

It's by no means unique to the UK.

Recently? It's always been there hasn't it? Nothing to add tbh, other than I think this will be moved to the Lounge. wink

In that respect yes. That's one of the very few things that I like about American society. hehe

Yes. It's human nature not a Country specific issue.

Surround yourself with the right people and good things will happen.

Likewise, and Canadians actually. In the rest of the world it just basically boils down to jealousy, despite how much everyone denies it.

It is in stark contrast to the attitude in the USA, the American dream and all that, tend to find people with money who have worked hard are given bit more respect sort of good on ya attitude

The Australians embrace success better too. This is partly because anyone can afford to live the Australian dream- owning a landcruiser and a 'tinny' (fishing boat). The only difference between rich and poor is how big your boat is and how new the Land Cruiser is.

It's nothing to do with success, money or jealousy. Some people have class, and some don't. The Brits tend to resent 'loud' people, that's all. And some don't have the brain to work it out, so they resort to the simplistic to explain it, like writing it off as jealousy or being snobby. It isn't.

It isn't something I experienced as a child, it was only when I came to the UK that the "he's got more than me so I don't like him" attitude appeared.

In North America people seem to more embrace the idea that they will one day have that house/car/boat etc.. rather than resent the others for having it...

because Brits rely on the state too much to help them through life..

High taxes and draconian laws/red tape make it difficult for the average joe to earn his way up the ladder, so those that do make it are very much in the minority.

Everyone else is just Jealous

For example, you will find Americans in general have much higher disposable income to splash out on 2nd and third cars for "fun"

When I worked over there I was earning 37 dollars an hour some days

A lot of Brits (me included) really don't like brash, over-confident people.

This explains our dislike of many self-made, successful people, but also our dislike of chavs, who have the brashness and over-confidence, just no reason to have them.

That's because they live in a country where everyone has to work, or they don't get stuff (like healthcare), so working hard is seen as almost universally good.

People in the the UK have it easy, they get that st handed to them on a plate without having to raise a finger. This might seem like a good thing, except now everyone thinks it's an inalienable right. They've forgotten that the only reason they can have it at all is because it's paid for by the hard work of others.

This country needs a fking good kick up the arse with a healthy dose of reality IMO.

As much as I hate to say it, it's because we're a nation of realists and frown upon aspiration.

I hate it when people/media automatically assume (or claim) because someone drives a Ferrari or similar (not that I do) they have a small penis. What the hell is that about? 'they must be making up for something' - yeah right, when you're a multi-millionaire you going to bump around in an old fiesta aren't you?
