Just call it the A1 Quattro and put my name down.
Ditch the dsg to keep the cost/weight down if you must.
me too. I'll have mine with the 265bhp S3 engine tweaked to 300bhp, fruity exhaust, lightweight sports seats, no rear seats, plenty of lightened CF panels and parts, quattro, and manual. Keep it relatively stock looking from the outside please.Ditch the dsg to keep the cost/weight down if you must.
how much heavier would a 265 4 pot be over any of the current standard engine options?

which seems amazing, or someone has got their figures wrong!
Nope not wrong. All the latest cars are coming out weighing less than their predecessors' it seems, which can only be a good thing.[quote=danp
Audi say the gross weight limit of the base A1 is 1490kg .. so:
1040kg - 225kg (half of the full load) - 30kg (for 90% of 45 litres tank) = 785kg unladen (no fuel or EU additions)
Base MINI (online numbers) is 1135kg to EU2 spec, where EU2:
"²The figure quoted includes a 90% tank filling, 68 kg for the driver and 7 kg for luggage."
So .. 1135kg - 27kg (90% of 40 litre tank) - 68kg - 7kg = 1033 kg
quote]
I would calculate the figures to make the A1 equivalent with the Mini as:
Base Mini 1135kg inc driver
Base A1 1040 + 75 for driver/luggage = 1115kg
Polo 1.2T 1088kg inc driver
Polo GTI (DSG) is 1269kg inc driver

Yeah but Audi themselves say it's 1040kg to that Directive 80/1268/EEC (which includes over 250kg of load) ... Base Mini 1135kg inc driver
Base A1 1040 + 75 for driver/luggage = 1115kg
Polo 1.2T 1088kg inc driver

I think that they are mistaken, figures near the MINI/Polo would seem more realistic, especially as it doesn't have any lightweight tech at all, or anything clever whatsoever for that matter.

I hope this is a proper baby quattro.
If not, that headline might as well read 'Version of Polo GTI for people with more money than sense could be on the way.'
I honestly think they will sell more A1's in that spec in the Uk than Polos, even though the Audi will be priced at a premium, would that be a problem as far as VAG are concerned???If not, that headline might as well read 'Version of Polo GTI for people with more money than sense could be on the way.'
I'm well aware that the VW-Audi crossover engineering harks all the way back to the original Golf/Polo/Scirocco/Passat sharing their innards with various Audis when VW were in a tight spot as the Beetle's appeal was flagging and they desperately needed new models, but you'd have thought they'd have developed very distinct identities by now.
To my mind, no Audi is a true Audi unless it's got 4WD.

Mark 4 Supra weighs less than the Mark 3.
Just for some older examples.
