If somebody bought a different sized set of wheels they'd presumably flog the tyres along with the old wheels, not individually for 20 quid each. Tyres from a scrappy works if you are trying to re-try a 1996 Ford Mondeo but is less useful if you are trying to find some 255/35/18's for a 330Ci!

I cannot imagine you being able to find decent, quality tyres at 20 quid for a 330i. I dont even know why you'd want to try!

I used to get some pretty decent ones for the Supra of a similar size, quite often good brands with a few thousand miles of life in them for that or not much more. Not always easy but if you know a few places then you can usually find what you're looking for.

As for why you would want to, well 500 quid for 4 new ones, versus 80 for used speaks for itself unless the new ones last 5 and a half times longer, which in my experience is very unlikely!

http://www.jettyres.co.uk/part-worn-tyres/ on their sample price list quote 80 quid for a pair of 255/55/18s delivered anywhere in the UK.

If you're trying to run a performance car (or any car) on a tight budget then it's a very worthwhile saving.

Buy a cheap snotter.

Spend the money on decent clothes and a Rolex and cab fares and drinks.

You'll get laid more.

And no brand specified! They could be linglongs?

Probably worth buying a Focus 1.6 instead. When I was motoring on a tight budget I drove a Mondeo, and was happier for it.

Part worn tyres on an M3. Don't come within a mile of me please.

If I spent 500 on a set of tyres I'm pretty sure I couldn't get a hard on for a month anyway.

I live in Bangkok now, I don't run a car and I can get laid for pennies smile

And all the rubber I buy here is brand new.

Could be Dunlops or Continentals too. I used to go and pick them myself so I could see tread depth, brand and have a good look at them first. Never had any problem.

Soovy, when was the last time you saw on M3, or any other car in the world driving along that wasn't on part worn tyres?

I thought about buying one of these, I could insure it for a reasonable amount at 21 (my current age) but didn't go for it in the end (I was going to break my race CRX to fund it and didn't). I ended up buying a 1.5 CRX in the end and have really been enjoying it biggrin

My race CRX was a road car last year and very quick, E36 M3 quick. I am now struggling to find a car to replace that on the road that is reasonably affordable! I went and bought a motorbike instead - hence no need for a quick road car now!

By the way I do agree that trying to run a car that is beyond your means is silly, and sometimes down right depressing, but the idea that a tyre is dangerous or otherwise inferior simply because it has been used before is simply wrong, and there are huge savings to be made there.

The important difference between buying a part worn tyre and driving a car that already has tyres fitted, which are therefore worn, is that there is a logical and reasonable explanation for the existence of 'already worn' tyres on a used car or a used set of wheels.

Whereas where on earth do part worn tyres come from? Who thinks 'My Michelin Pilot Sport 3's have 5mm of tread left, I think I'll get rid of them now?'

Nobody.

They come from places like Germany where the tyre laws are far more stringent to which I would say if they are not good enough for the Germans why should they be good enough for us? Or they come off written off cars where you've NO IDEA what sort of forces they were subject to in the event of the accident...

When I had my type R, I was after 2 extra wheels as spares for track days, Managed to get them from a breakers nearby. much better nick than the wheels that I had already, with nearly new Hankook ventus V12 tyres. £120 for the pair of wheels and tyres, slightly more than a single Toyo T1R.
Finding tyres on their own might be a bit more bother, but not every written off car is running around on 4 baldies.
