I was also taken with the fact that it was a faster sprinter than its saloon brother: my memory tells me 0-60 figures of 6.1secs versus 6.4secs, though I can only find the figures for the saloon (part of a five-star Autocar road test, no less).
Whyzat then?

(touring has same engine & power but more weight presumably)

Fabulous shed. Always liked those 328's whether saloon, coupe or touring

They often have a fabulously burbly back box - I still stop and listen if I'm walking down the road and one passes by.

About 1 billion times more my cup of tea than last week's Landie.

Apparently the same goes for Octavia VRS's. The estate is meant to be slightly swifter than the saloon.

Strange one that.

+1 on the positive comments. smile

Had a 328i saloon a while back, also in German Racing Boston Green. The M52 engine is lovely, feels a little lazy but spins up very nicely. Decent torque too. Lacked a touch of character versus the M50 in the 325i though.

Initally came with Alpina reps (boo!), but soon changed them to the genuine 20 spoke Softlines.

It is the absolute antithesis to that thread on "things I hate in car ads"...

I can't tell you how much I want to buy that car simply because the ad is so great.
bow

PS - and a PH discount!!

BMW tourings have lower ratio diffs to compensate for the extra weight...results in slightly better 0-62 times

This has literally made my day! I bought a 96 328i touring manual in Feb. and barring a few problems, one leccy window, and one central locking playing up, an ABS senso and a Camshaft sensor, its been wonderful. I paid £770 for a full BMW history, 10 months MOT and it had 140k miles. Very little rust, interior is in brilliant condition, and is a pretty economical motorway cruiser, so good infact I think I maybe have got my first speeding fine yesterday...95 ish past a mobile on the A303 :-s BTw, I thought the 0-60 on these is officially 7.4 seconds?

Yep - thats more like the figure. 6.1 to 6.4 secs did seem a little optimistic!

They def do have lower ratios. A mate of mine had an E30 Tourer in Manual, and that used to beat his 325i Sport in accelleration up umtil about 90mph

Nice motor. I had an E36 328 saloon a few years back and it was a great car. Plenty of niggles to keep you busy though...

so given that most 328s are open diff anyway, if you dropped a tourer diff in a coupe...... scratchchin

Would rather spend a bit more on this and get a manual:

Sure, if you can afford to go to 150% of the original budget.....

I'm gonna be keeping an eye on this and if it doesn't go soon the E30 may have to

I too would be concerned. Did you do a HPI check? If not there might be tears before bedtime...
Of course! HPI came back clean as a whistle... that's why I can cope with the - ahem - flaws. Besides, two new rear doors for ma breaker's and I'll be laughing (hopefully).

Also worth putting a new water pump on it if you cant find any sign of a recent one in the SH. The original has a plastic impeller that tends to break up at about 120k miles / this age. Replacements are easy to do and come with a cast impeller.

Not to mention the tappety noise between 4,500 - 5000rpm.
