Had a dozy woman drive straight at me on a single track lane. She was looking over her shoulder screaming at her brats in the back seat, while driving forward obliviously at about 40 mph.
I had to drive up a steep grass bank to my left to avoid a head on, which was so steep the car ended up on it's side.
Insurance and Bib found in my favour.
You're lucky the other driver didn't miss you, or was traced. My wife and our next door neighbour have both been run off country roads by other cars that just carried on never to be seen again. My wife's was into the sandstone wall of a bridge.I had to drive up a steep grass bank to my left to avoid a head on, which was so steep the car ended up on it's side.

My kids were both in the back seats!! A thought that haunted me for years afterwards

What happened? Thats a fair impact it looks to have taken?
Hope everyone was ok? Especially the kids?
I was unconscious for about 30 minutes. Wife was knocked around and bruised. My daughter who was sat in the rear near side was fine other than being very upset. But my Son who was sat in what used to be the rear offside had to be air lifted to hospital. Thankfully he pulled through and if fine now, but he was out cold for a few days. The impact was an estimated 60 mph. I was sitting at the back of a traffic jam and the approaching driver (VW Passat) didn't see the back of the queue. I guess his attention was probably diverted elsewhere but we never found out.
The only good thing to come from all this, is the sizeable compensation sitting in a child trust fund!
lesson learned - I always approach stationary traffic slowly and consciously bring the vehicles behind into a controlled stop. I always watch them approach and give myself an escape route. I knew the guy was going to hit us but I didn't leave enough room to get out of the way

Very good tip - I got praise on my Advanced Driving test for doing that around a bend when I'd seen standing traffic from an earlier viewpoint.I do it on motorways too - bugger these people who say don't brake, I want to make sure the guy behind has seen that I'm braking and slow him so that I won't be compacted into the car in front.

... I wondered where the fuel tank is sited and why it didnt go up? Shuddered at that thought.
It's a myth that fuel tanks often explode on impact.Mythbusters proved this.
As I once found out at Spa in a Caterham
