Took 3 months to get it fully rebuilt.
Why do I recognise that car? Is it famous?

The result of a 40mph head on with someone on the wrong side of the road seemingly distracted by his wife sat next to him. Car held up pretty well really, although still suffering with back problems but it could've been much worse.

Hit that wall in the background, then hit a signpost and ended up in the middle of the road.
Was rush hour at the time and still can't believe I avoided hitting any other cars.

lesson learned - I always approach stationary traffic slowly and consciously bring the vehicles behind into a controlled stop. I always watch them approach and give myself an escape route. I knew the guy was going to hit us but I didn't leave enough room to get out of the way frown
Very good tip - I got praise on my Advanced Driving test for doing that around a bend when I'd seen standing traffic from an earlier viewpoint.

I do it on motorways too - bugger these people who say don't brake, I want to make sure the guy behind has seen that I'm braking and slow him so that I won't be compacted into the car in front.
For me, approaching stationary traffic at speed = hazard lights. Anything to make the person following take a little bit more notice.

On topic to the OP, that's probably everyone's worst nightmare, glad you and yours are OK smile

This is one of the fears I have about country roads at times, it's not that hard to have a closing speed of 120mph and at that sort of speed I'd hate to see the damage from an offset head on shunt.

I do this as well, especially if I'm in the inside lane with the trucks thumping along. The comment about leaving the room and the wheels at an angle sounds useful. Certainly don't think about pointing the wheels away from the car in front.

198something.

Compound bend + lamp post + inexperienced driver = Bent.

Driver trapped + smoke coming from engine bay = Fear.

No serious injuries though, shame about the Sud.

The driver who hit me would have gone smack square into the rear of my car, no doubt killing my kids had I not noticed him approaching at speed and tried to get out of the way - hence the off-side impact. I just didn't have enough time or space to properly get out of the way...it was split second stuff, but I thank God I saw him and at least moved a bit.
Witnesses said my car pirouetted up in the air almost vertically and landed the wrong way on the verge.
Quite a miracle no one was killed.

This thread is pretty sobering. Drive safely all!!
