Just come back from visiting my Mum who is in the market for a 4x4 for towing the horse box. Imagine my joy when we went to a garage and the salesman tried to steer her into a Audi Q7 S-Line and she responded with the above topic title.

You know what? I don't think it did, it just has the wrong imagine for real horse owners. Could be why she's now looking at a Range Rover.

She called a salesman she'd never met an idiot?

Charming.

I'm not saying it was polite or right, but when she went to said dealer and stated from the offset that she was looking for either a Range Rover or a Disco and the guy proceeds to try and get her to look at, in the following order
a Chevrolet Captiva (It's very much like the Discovery Madam)
A Nissan Qashqai (Do you really need something as big as your two early mentioned vehicles madam?)
A Suzuki Grand Vitara (Perfect car for the more petite woman madam)
and then the Q7 (Clearly madam is a woman who expects a certain level of class from her car) I can fully understand why she let decorum fly out of the window.

Or perhaps he was trying to help by offering up cars she may not have considered?

waiting with baited breath for a certain poster to appear... smile

That's a great quote. Love it!

But in their defense, that probably is the best car Audi make for towing a horsebox. Why was she in the Audi dealership? If she sneers at that, what car in the Audi range WOULD be suitable? I'm sure there are several with towing kerbweights high enough, (IIRC my '95 S6 is 2100kg for a braked trailer!) but the Q7 surely must be the best for it.

Mind you, I'd be in the Land rover dealership too!

ETA - Just reread and realised she wasn't in an Audi dealership. Never mind. Still, as a towcar for horses, surely the Q7 isn't that bad?

It wasn't an Audi dealership but rather an independent 4x4 specialist, but you are right as I would agree that the Q7 probably is the best towing car they make but, and I quote my mother here "It looks like something a drug dealer or pimp would drive"

As for the suggestion that maybe the dealer was trying to offer up alternatives that she hadn't thought of, who in their right mind would compare the Captiva to a Discovery?!?! It's like saying a Donkey is very similar to a Horse.

I imagine the 'S-line' part is the key here. A Q7 would be perfectly capable of towing a horse box and everything that goes with that, but considerably less so if it's got 20" alloys, no tyres to speak of, no suspension and a few dubious appointments to the bodywork.

Great! there has not been an Audi bashing thread for at least five minutes! I cant wait for the next one!

I know 'S-line luxuary' is a bit of a tit but its getting boring now! every thread turns into an Audi bashing thread!

Having re-read it, I quite agree.

Sounds like the salesman was a bit of an idiot. If I was told by customer "Range Rover/Disco" I would be thinking Large 4x4 wanted.... so I'd go straight for either of those if we had them, then the Q7 (it is a large 4x4) or any other large 4x4s, then if didn't like any of those, mention any other 4x4s.

He wasn't listening, and his first 3 options were just stupid.

Got what he deserved I think! smile

To be fair the only reason why she is considering a Range Rover is she has had two previously and has never had a problem with either of them so there is a little bit of brand loyalty going on there. Plus we are talking a real Rangie here and not a Sport.

What can I say, for the most part she is a woman who knows what she wants.

Then she should have gone to a Landrover dealership! Maybe its just me but I think she was very rude! the dealer had no Range Rovers so she showed her some alternatives and she calls her an idiot! I would have told her to fk off!

In honesty matt, I think he was a poor salesman. It sounds like the Q7 was the most like the Rangie that they had in stock, so he/she should have shown her that first, followed by any others. Some backup about the (cheaper, smaller) brands like their towing capability would have been a good idea.

But to start with a Chevy Captiva, and Qashquai when she had said she was looking for a Land/range rover type is stupid.

I have a decent understanding of sales, and sometimes the customer service part of it seems to be overlooked.

Was it stated at any point he didn't have any? No
Was she rude? Without question

They guy had two Rangies on the forecourt and a Disco, however seemed resistant to showing them to a buyer who was ready to make a deal there and then. I am not condoning my mothers actions here, but I will refuse to condemn them especially when she was treated like an idiot who clearly doesn't have a clue about the vehicle she's looking for, which was the overwhelming impression that the dealer gave.
