I wouldn't worry too much about this junkpod being a danger on the roads, the thread referred to earlier started in January 2008 ... and most recently a declaration that nothing is happening.
The reg. number isn't on AskMID... fortunately.

What's the legal position with the mirrors being missing? (For road or track use)

You have to have them, as far as I know. But they don't have to be external - some hypermilers put them on the inside to reduce drag / gain MPG.

What intrigues me the most is that clearly, someone with access to the tools and materials needed, thought nothing of making a set of 200 mm spacers and handing them to someone who is clearly totally effing clueless about vehicle engineering. At a guess, he didn't make the guy sign a disclaimer pointing out that the items pictured above are only to be used as paperweights and should absolutely, positively not be anywhere near an actual vehicle...
If someone turns up at a machine shop and asks for some wheel spacers to be machined then it is not their responsibility to advise on the design. No disclaimer is necssary as they were produced to the owners requirements and as a one off not subject to any performance guarantees. Plus the machinist was probably just curious to see what happened when the thing was driven at speed with masses of leverage on the hub bearing smile

It's also notable and wrong that he wasn't paid for it...

I read the first six pages and must admit, I thought well done to him. Insurance for young guys is so extreme that, simply, you have to have low powered cars. However, the chance to individualise it is there. And it's what he's doing. He correctly said himself - the spacers were a stupid idea (I think he did it to see if he could - not with any intention of actually running with them).

But look - he's doing it all himself, he's enjoying it, where's the problem?
That's true, I just wonder why anyone would spend all that time and money on a car he's never got to the point he can drive it. He's had if for two years after all.
But hey, if it keeps him off the streets smile

Shame he removed the spacers from the car, I wondered what would fail first, the bearing, the bolts or the suspension biggrin

Except most "affordable" insurers for young people hate mods - most insurance companies would bend you over for adding alloy wheels, let alone if you were to tell them you had a new air filter / coilovers / ridiculous spacers - but then tbh I doubt he'd declare it. I mean it's not like they are going to notice the tyres are now suddenly 2 foot further out than they should be? *rolls eyes*

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the real reason for his change of tack were that he'd tried to get an insurance quote. No underwriter is ever going to take on a car with those spacers.

I was never in favour of the death penalty, but I think i might of changed my mind.

What makes this whole thing worse is there are thousand and thousands of mongoloids out there who would think this looks great.

Everyone is so bloody serious!! Yeah stupid idea, he knows it now but for God's sake he's a kid modifying his car with minimal skill, virtually no engineering talent but a truckload of enthusiasm. Shouldn't he be applauded (and mocked) by PH??? Not stupid fking comments like he should be put to death!

Did no-one ever modify their cars when they were young and did no-one ever make any mistakes? I know i did (admittedly I never fitted 140mm spacers thoughhehe)

The second set of alloys were rather nice.

The justification for not going wider with the spacers as "it wouldn't get out of the garage" was one of life's memorable reads.

I've yet to figure out how he's going to open the doors and get fuel in the thing.

Give it six months or so and he'll get a girlfriend; the car will then be for sale as an unfinished project.

I wouldn't argue that if done well it wouldn't look good

Just 140mm wheel spacers doesn't count as done well

Something called sarcasm, but there is modifying the odd piece on your car and then taking a 1.0l peugeot and spending a small fortune on it to make it look worse and practically undriveable.
