How do these compare with each other? Economy? Reliability? Drivability?

Looking at Legacys which have the choice of both and the Forester which only has the 2.5 H4.

I think they all can like a drink and all can sound very good.

Economy isn't the biggest of concerns really. I don't expect either to be great, but am curious on quite how bad they are? 15-20mpg? 25? Higher?

Seems to be a fair few mentions of the H6 having headgasket problems too? Is this issue limited to just the H6 from a certain era, or all of them? Is the H4 bad for HG failures too?

GravelBen is probably the person to ask on these. They really know their stuff.

I think HG issues are more akin to the H6 than the 4, but don't quote me on it.

MPG wise, well I think it depends how you drive more than anything. And as all the cars are AWD it doesn't help on this front. I'd guess a realistic view would be 22-28mpg. Maybe slightly better on a long gentle motorway run and worse if you're really hammering it.

I know a mate of mine with a UK spec Turbo 2000 Impreza really struggles to better 23mpg on a motorway run and a lot lower for local short journeys.

Hopefully he will see this thread then. Found another thread which mentioned sub 20mpg for the 3.0? That would be a bit too low! On the plus side, it appears to only be early H6 engines which have HG issues.

A 2.5 WRX wagon appeals the most but I think it will need to be the legacy for space reasons.

You'll hear very mixed fuel economy reports depending who you talk to!

In mixed use you can probably expect to average mid-20s from the 3.0 and high 20s from the 2.5 - both figures a bit worse if you do a lot of city driving, or better (~30mpg) for open road driving. A family friend saw 37mpg from his 2006 H6 sedan on one trip at a steady 60-65mph, but thats a quite exceptional figure.

I know its not a direct comparison but my Legacy GTB (2002, 280bhp 2.0TT) averages 26ish mpg in mixed driving and does 30-32 on the open road.

The early (pre-1998) 2.5 is fairly well known for HGF, I haven't personally heard anything about it being a particular problem with any newer cars. Some of the H6's can drink a bit of oil, but then again some don't - like most cars, 'internet failures' are much more common than those which occur in the real world!

Driving-wise you're comparing ~180bhp with 240 so there's an obvious difference there. I haven't driven an H6, the 2.5 is nice and torquey low down but feels pretty flat up high in the revs, at least when you're used to a turbo version! hehe
