"he slowest car in its class"

Shot at (I think) Brooklands, alongside an Aston vantage, Ferrari 355 and somehting else- in other words, another car with a 6 speed gearbox.

If only ads were still like this today

Every 'legendary' car is overhyped. If you listen to people evangelising about any of them you'll get the same thing, but the 205 GTI is no more oversold than any of the others.

You could argue that now the prices are going up and good ones are harder than ever to find that they represent less value for money (i.e. the price has now caught up with the status) perhaps, but they're still a great steer. Perhaps not as good as a 106 Rallye though...

ETA: Riggers...it sounds like you have access to all the old autocar roadtests. I know they were online for a short time; but not all of them. Does the general public have access?

It's a Haymarket title, there is a huge library on site of all past issues, or all magazines they make, for refrence.

No. It does not. The form puma also.
IIRC there was a two-at-once SOTW once as well. Can't remember what the car was - my mind says Rover SD1, BMW 535i and Lancia Delta HF Turbo all at the same time for some reason.

Brilliant chassis, gutsy twin-cammer, excellent value. For £900 you can't do much better!

That one is online - but I can sneak down to Haymarket's bound volumes should the need (or mood) take me. 115 years of Autocars, plus a complete collection of Motors is quite a good way to lose an entire afternoon smile

I also have a complete collection at home of Autocar from 95-now... nerd

Sadly it's not a public collection... (neither mine nor Haymarket's)

Shedtastic for the second week in a row. Even my brother-in-law's diesel hack 306 had a great chassis. Peugeots of that era really hit the spot.

i had one which i bought from cars 4 u (remember them) by p/exing (how i cry to think of it) my 16v integrale. it was quite good, the peugeot, except one of the suspension springs was cracked, despite coming through their stringent 50 point check. think i should have kept the integale.

Y'know, it's not too late to change; you don't have to be a tool all your life.

I had one of these as my first fun car - paid a fair bit more than £900

I loved the car when working, thought it was great looking, had a leather/alcantara interior and didn't sound too bad at all under some right foot - handling was also superb!

Unfortunately I had quite a few issues including a cam belt snap and ECU failure - both costing me a lot.

You're a bit odd aren't you? The 205 GTI was recognised as being the best of its generation. It has legendary hot hatch status. As an owner of a 205 GTI 1.9 for 85,000miles I can vouch for the fact that it thoroughly deserved its status.

Check his profile, it appears he's owned one.

People are getting things a bit mixed up. Just because a car is overrated, doesn't make it a poor car. I suppose it comes down to expectation. Most cars, however good, won't be able to match up to expectation. Cars like this, the MX5, MK2 Golf GTI etc. are all fine cars, however people go on about them too much (esp on here, including many who've not owned/driven one) and it gets a bit out of proportion.

The more something is hyped, the higher expectation is, the more likely it becomes underwhelming when someone does finally drive one. The hype gets people thinking there's going to be a "wow" moment when they drive one.
