I have just had the annual

"Ooh your are off to LeMans next week, do you think you will win this year?"

Why do people think that everyone that goes to Lemans is competing in the race!
Perhaps because spectators often cover their cars with stickers.
Mine hasn't.......

That's nothing, I've frequently returned from trackdays and got people asking if I'd won ...
To which, surely, the only suitable answer is 'yes'.

This is more like Bizarre Things Non Petrolheads Do. My old mum, who was a good driver in most ways, expected a lot from cars. Three up in my dad's MGB GT, with a cold engine, she cruised through a pub car park to turn round, pulled out into the traffic at walking pace - still in third - and with cars closing in fast, instead of changing down, she Just started shouting, "Come on! Come on!" at the poor car.

It wasn't an isolated incident.

8.52am Damn. Got a puncture and there's no jack in the car. Stupid Audi

11.17am AA man found it. While he was loosening the wheel nuts, I discovered a hidden compartment in the boot. Containing the jack.

Well given that she had obviously never changed a tyre before and didn't know what she was doing, at least she had the independence to attempt it and wasn't scared. That said, trying to change a tyre isn't a good idea if you don't know how, but the "I can do it" mentality is to be praised really.

Not exactly a non-petrolhead, but sold a car through that website that had an annoying jingle a while back (you know the one)

As he was inspecting the car he pointed out the tyres were crap, which they were. He asked how old they were. 'about 3 years or so' I said. He then said 'tyres should be replaced about every 6 months ideally even if you don't do many miles as they start to crack'. That's right, every 6 months you should be getting 4 new tyres, I think I have gone longer than that on the same tank of fuel.

I was told 5-6 years regardless of mileage (because standing for long periods causes flat spots and pressure cracks... UV light damage... and lots of driving causes wear as you'd expect. Something like that)

Maybe he heard the same and misremembered.

Tyres do degrade over time, even if you're not driving on them. It's not going to happen in anything close to 6 months though.

I thought it was more like 10 years.

My Fiesta is 6 years old still wearing the original rears, about 1/2 worn at 34,000 miles.

It's going to take a while to double that mileage and wear them out....biggrin

yes

Lord knows how old the tyres on the Land Rover I just bought are and they're cracked enough for it to be an advisory on the last MOT.

I was just saying, that although the timing is wrong the fact tyres degrade is known... although the guy who told me 5-6 years was a tyre fitter and probably fishing for business.

My Triumphs can stand for a while at times. This will give minor flat spots on the tyres which cause an unbalance steering wobble for a few miles before they come out.

I found 6/7 year old Pirellis were taking up to 60 miles to work the flat spots out. I changed them as being not worth using.

I found the 6 year old Bridgestones on my S2000 were rapidly becoming very dicey in wet conditions, as they hardened with age. My cars are kept in a dark shed, only getting sun when out. I live in Queensland, so our heat may cause this rapid deterioration, but whatever it is, it is not worth running on tyres over about 6 years old.

That is possibly why piles of used tyres last for decades and decades, smile

Fiat Puntos and Vauxhall Corsas on the other hand share a platform and some engines, as do Clios and Micras.

After I bought my ST220, a certain t0sser who had a face you wouldn't tire of slapping commented "you spent all that money on a Mondeo? You could have bought a BMW with that money'.

Another one was some silly women in an office I worked in back in 1995 when I was 20. She commented that my newly acquired Sierra Sapphire 2.0i Ghia was "an extension of your penis"...her boss then pulled her to one side to explain that he had the same car and he was merely a family man. Silly cow!

I seem to remember on the Michelin site that they said that 10 years was a reasonable time to expect the tyres to last. I've no idea what other brands recommend.
