The Mrs shows me a post on a facebook caravan sales page.

" Can my VW two door tow a small caravan "

Forget for second that most are 3 or 5 door but hey.

(So we are both thinking does she mean VW up , fox , polo , golf , scirocco etc. Could even be a transporter by the askers logic. )

Someone asks what model

" I think its a polo "

What engine size.

" I'll ring my husband .............

1.2"

We did not bother asking if this was TDI or TSI, just NO don't do it.

Should some people even be driving knowing so little never mind thinking of the responsibility of safely and considerately towing a caravan!
Yet there's a massive market for micro/teardrop caravans that could be safely towed behind a 1.2 Polo...?
Your right , could have been a folding camper too and the car could have been the tsi 110 hp. The original asker just said small caravan so more details were needed.

It just made me think that the person describing their car as a VW two door had to think what model their car was and needed check the engine size etc. To me perhaps not quite right person for towing safely.

I did a rally driving experience thing a few years back at Castle Coombe. They did it in a 106 Rallye as it was a smallish course that was good fun in a light basic but well balanced car. Anyone who I mentioned this to thought I was ripped off (it was a gift, given to a friend but for 2 so I was his plus 1) and it would have been better in a Subaru or Mitsubishi. It would have been like driving round a multistory in a Humvee in anything bigger.
I visit combe regularly, and they are not currently using a 106 rallye.

2 guesses what they are using now wink
RWD N/A Subarus?
Subaru Impreza's. Bang on. Although they look (and sound) like standard turbo 2000's or WRX's.

For the size of the track, I'd rather a 106.
If it's Subaru Rally Experience most of them are NA and converted to RWD, the 4WD turbo is for folks signed on for a full day. Fantastic fun, highly recommended.
Didn't know they had RWD ones, sounds cool!

These were definitely standard WRX's. Sounded like a misfiring 4 cylinder lol.

A favourite of mine (that I may have posted before):-

'Why buy a fast car? You won't get there any sooner'

People who say that kind of thing instantly get filed into a little box in my head with 'idiot' written on one side and 'tt' on the other.

Even ignoring the obvious inaccuracy of the statement, why choose to st on someone's parade and insult them? I would never look at a new car on which someone had spent a lot of money and say 'Why buy a dull Ecobox smoker pile of crap? You'll hate your life even more'

This should be filed under 'Stupid things Petrol heads say', the Alpina C27 used a long stroke crank of similar dimensions to the ETA crank but it was forged. The ETA crank was cast and drsigned for a engine red lined at 4700.
The Alpina crank is much much stronger and will rev all day long above 6000.
Many enthusiasts have used ETA bottom ends in C27 type conversions but many have also had them let go.
Another problem is the ETA was a low compression engine, the comression stress' do not help either.

Richard Hearn at Fritz's Bits is the man to talk to about this, having litteraly picked up the peices of people doing this.
That makes sense. I can accept my wrongness!

Agree, I don't think I could actually be nasty about somebody's new car.
They're out there though...

The E30 325 had a 2.7 litre engine.

Only the 325E had the 2.7 litre long-stroke engine. Slower revving and less powerful than the 2.5 in the 325i.

Alpina matched the 2.7 bottom end to the 2.5 top end (better flowing, large valves) to make their B27. Also a common conversion amongst enthusiasts.
I don't actually remember us getting the 325E in the UK, although the 525E was fairly popular.

I don't think they are trying to be nasty. They are the 43 mph everywhere brigade, who blindly follow the car in front, never overtake, and take 3 days to accelerate up to NSL through the gears because if they go above 2500 rpm the engine will explode. This is why they don't understand a fast car.

An elderly lady in our village had a Skoda Rapide, rear engined early model. I was passing her house one Winter's morning when I saw clouds of smoke pouring out of the exhausts, the cold engine on full choke screaming on full revs.
"What are you doing Annie " says I with an incredulous air.
"I'm trying to blow the smoke out of the exhaust pipes" says she........

My favourite are the anti car. anti road twunts who say we should not build more roads, because if we do they will only be filled up with more cars.
This being the case, Then we must not build any more hospitals, because if we do, they will only fill up with more sick people, using this line of reasoning, it means if we build more hospitals we will be creating more and more sick people.
We must not build more houses, because if we do, they will only fill up with more people, therefore if we build more houses we will cause a population explosion.
We must not build more schools, because if we do, they will only fill up with more children, again leading to a population explosion.
We must not build more shops or businesses, because if we do they will only fill up with more people who want to make, buy and sell things.
Dont these anti car, anti road donkeys realise the utter stupidity of their statement, or is it they have a highly selective the buck stops here' approach, which can stop on anything `they' are not interested, in or do not like?

Marketing is all you have unfortunately.
Well that and an utter ignorance about the basics of supply and demand.

Feel free to educate yourself about induced demand and price elasticity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand

Hint: transport demand is elastic while injuries requiring hospital admission aren't.

Stupid things non petrolheads say?
