Are there any NA diesels around? Everyone thinks their car is fast. I suppose most cars are fast compared to the cars in which most of us learned to drive. I think the first 3 or 4 cars I drove all had under 100bhp.
Most people compare to their previous car and cars have generally been getting faster for a few years, so it;s probably the fastest car they have owned.

And many people - it seems - think they have a fast car that's faster than everyone else on the road. At the risk of sweeping stereotypical generalisation, what about the many blondes in dark A5 cabrios with red hoods running on a 2.0 TDI that seem to think they own lane 3? Or the bloke in the 14 year old Golf GTI on the A34 this morning who was thrashing the st out of it to try and show everyone just how much faster he was than them, before eventually moving into lane 1 and letting some genuinely fast cars past smile

[soapbox]
There are lots of cars these days which can go fast, and maybe there are more people who choose to use them to drive fast when they can. What boils my piss is the folk on an A or B road who think they're in such a fast car that they can't be overtaken, so they're hard on the gas on every straight but also hard on the brakes for every single bend or kink in the road.

Yes, your 5-pot SMAX is a great and fast thing, but all those cars in your rear mirror that weren't there 2 minutes ago tells you that it and you aren't *that* fast, and if you'd back off a bit to let these others past, it would save a bunch of stress for all concerned...

Or you could get a faster car so you can get past anyway. [/generic PH post]

This weekend, chatting to one of my brother's mates who was talking about his trip in the loan car my brother had recently "it had 160mph clocks so you know it's a fast car"

It was a Citroen DS4 110HDI.... top speed 118mph.

I honestly didn't know that there are people who think that the highest speed on the speedo is representative of the car's top speed.

Most of them are mini-petrolheads below the age of 9.

My 1999 1.4 Renault Clio (with 75 fine French horsepower) went up to 160 on the speedo. My 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero (remapped to 290 ish horsepower) also goes up to 160 on the speedo.

I can't help but think that the Clio wouldn't keep up with the Saab, in terms of both acceleration and top speed.

VW used an SDI engine in the Golf MK3/4/5, also in a Polo and a Seat van as well (probably lots more examples).

My brother used to have a diesel fiesta that was NA diesel.
A mate at work runs a saxo NA diesel as a shed.

A friend of mine is totally baffled as to why they put speeds on it the car won't reach. Tried reasoning that they put the same speedo in faster models, car could go really fast down a long steep hill or the fact that speedos are just a part attached to the car and there is no point speccing one for each engine but she is not having it, it is something weird the manufacturers do.

I used to think similar when I was a kid I must have been about 7 or 8. I was so proud of my dad's car being able to do 160mph, whereas my uncle's car could only do 130mph. When my dad's friend came to visit (from Germany) I remember telling everybody in year 4 that my dad's friend had a car that could do 260 "mph". It was a Mercedes 300D. hehe

Housemate of mine a few years ago had a Peugeot 306 non-turbo diesel. It was comically slow, I seem to recall 4-up with a bit of shopping in the boot meant we were regularly out-accelerated by buses.

Up until quite recently VW still did a Golf SDi, S standing for Sans Turbo. 0-60 in about 15 seconds IIRC.

"Is your car broken?" from a concerned middle-aged woman.
"No, it's a sporty exhaust system as I like a nice noise from my car" from me.

This apparently was tantamount to me saying "yes, I like to watch stillborn births and then defecate on their lifeless bodies" given the facial expression I received.

"Why on earth would you want to make your car sound like that, it's too loud and it sounds awful." from the now-obvious 36mph-everywhere member.
"I enjoy driving to the conditions of the road and it's nice to know I have enough power to accelerate out of trouble when I need to. I also love track days where I can really let loose as it's just too dangerous to do so on the public roads. from a reasoned me.
"Why don't you just drive safely everywhere and save us all the trouble?" from a now-angry fat bint.
"Okay." -exuberant sideways exit from car park-

ETA: to provide a bit of balance, my neighbour isn't what I'd call a massive petrolhead - but I had the following conversation with him:
Neighbour: "Your exhaust is noisy, isn't it? Is it modified?"
Me: <uh oh> "Yes, it's modified. I have a full system as I love the noise it makes."
Neighbour: "oh."
Me: <expecting the residential mental> "If it's too noisy then please let me know, I'd rather not fall out over something as trivial as a car engine."
Neighbour: "Oh, stop talking rubbish. I could listen to your car all day! Just wanted to know if that was a normal car or if you had changed anything on it."

Wasn't expecting that!

Did you really say those things verbatim? Sounds like the sort of responses someone would like to have given if they'd had time to think and compose their words carefully!

Well it is, proportionately if not absolutely.
