A but cringe worthy as it appears that the Guardian found the least suitable person to go on a driving expereince and he makes it worse by doing the biggest no no following a track day - thinking you can drive home FAST and treat the road like a track.

Oh an 2.15sec , room for quite a lot of improvement before you "show Guildford a thing or two on the way home."
And this is my issue with that rag and the types they attract (though to be fair he could also be a troll - no-one can be that ttish and lacking in humour)…

What on earth is the Guardian doing, pandering to the most Neanderthal obsessions of Middle England? An addiction to with private motorised transport, and its role as surrogate dick for people who can't find any more constructive way of engaging with the world, is responsible for thousands of deaths every year (disproportionately those of pedestrians, cyclists and children), not to mention a whole portfolio of environmental damage, obesity, and perhaps least recognised, the atomisation of urban and suburban society, as isolated, angry individuals, perpetually stuck in their dirty, expensive boxes in a never-ending jam, take out their pathetic 'rage' on each other.

What do you think these drivers are going to do, though, when they're back on the lanes around Chiddingfold, having been egged on by the Stig all afternoon? The behaviour which is apparently harmless on a track encourages people who don't know better to drive dangerously in their own reasonably priced cars, where they will kill people. If I were the traffic dept of Surrey Police, I know where I'd point my speeding gun.

He must be a bundle of laughs!!

One that has been doing the rounds now between a few of us at local garage.
Mate is married to this woman, she sleeps with ex they get divorced. He kindly lends her his BMW X5 to run around in, take their daughter to school etc on the provision that he will get it back.

She pulls up in it one day, throws the keys at him and says "you can have your X5 back, I've gone and bought a proper 4x4"
Walks out the garage expecting to see a new Disco or a 90, maybe a Range Rover, nope a Frontera. An early SWB Vauxhall Frontera.

So now the running joke is how good the Frontera is, they stopped being made just to give others a chance in the 4wd market, and they are 6 figure cars to buy, if you can find one for sale.

All I know about them is what is on wikipedia, but they're basically an Isuzu and I thought Isuzu were pretty good in the 4WD sector (high/low range selector, etc.) and the X5 was panned for its off road ability, so is it that wrong for her to claim it's a "proper" 4x4 compared to the BM? I've not driven either, just wondering.

They may be about as reliable as a celebrity marriage, but SWB Fronteras do work quite nicely off-road. I'd certainly put them a long, long way up the "proper 4x4" list compared to an X5.

Sounds like the X5 was more suitable for her needs, though.

I suppose it depends what angle you're coming from - I was wondering if they're not as st as actual Vauxhalls. Seeing as they are badge-engineered, it's a bit different to saying, "well my Fabia is basically the same as an A1." (Or whatever.)

Plus, I'd argue that the defining characteristic of a 4x4 is its drivetrain, which is why I was asking about their off road capability, having only heard limited comments on both cars. Do you have some knowledge to impart on either model?

Guy at work this morning.

"I spent the weekend being driven round in my brother-in-laws new 911 Turbo. It's really fast. I think it's the fastest car in the world currently." Then looks at me: "Is it?"

Me: No.

It's possibly a bigger seperation of Frontera to MU than Fabia to A1.
The Opel/Vauxhall versions were built in the UK, to typical UK manufacturing standards and I believe the Opel/VX versions used GM engines and all the Isuzus used Isuzu engines.
Typical Vauxhall quality interior components and fitting and probably other components like springs, dampers and bushes were cheaper Vauxhall friendly variants.
GM engines would have GM loom and sensors, perhaps GM engine mounts, shafts, CVs?
As for offroading? I really couldn't say, you'd assume it's largely common but it's not too far fetched that they may have had different diffs in different markets.

It's not unheard of for the exact same make and model to have a nominally common component made by different suppliers in different countries, possibly with slightly different spec. like cheaper materials.

Meanwhile the Fabia and A1 probably use identical bushes, engines (the A1 will have more high power options I guess), don't know and cba trying to find out where they're each built.

Can't help but feel your last sentence is some kind of challenge tongue out

Nissan qashqai owning neighbour wants a new car, likes the elevated driving position so he announced he had found the perfect car to replace his 2008 qashqai.

Him: A qashqai!
Me: Oh, the new one looks quite nice.
Him: Not a new one, a newer one. Same shape as the one I have. Ticks all the boxes.
Me: What spec is it?
Him: It's perfect it ticks all the boxes.
Me: Leather seats?
Him: I don't know.
Me: What size engine?
Him: I don't know.
Me: Automatic?
Him: I don't know. Ticks all the boxes.
Me: OK, so it's a newer car, same model as you have.
Him: Yes.

I don't get it, how can a car "Tick all the boxes." if he can't even tell me what his boxes are, or what spec the car is. He hadn't even seen the car but asked the dealer to take it off sale, he was definitely buying it.

Damnit, I thought we were going to have an internet forum argument frown
Mainly guess work but I've done a little bit of quality stuff so have some vague notion of how they work these things.
On the other end of the sale, the old X-Type/Mondeo chestnut has been done to death on here buut, once upon a time I knew a guy fit Jag discs and pads to his Mondeo.. apparently they were cheaper?
