"It's a '99? Oh gosh you should really think about getting a new car..."

"Why?"

"Well it's old...It'll break down and stuff!"

By God you're right! My old Accord that has been family owned since new and NEVER let any of us down after 210k is going to suddenly combust and wipe out a family of bunnies...For fks SAKE.

I get this pretty much every week from one of my colleagues. He seems to be convinced that the only redeeming feature of a car is its age, you could gift him a Ferrai F40 and he'd probably complain that it was too old.

Last week I mentioned I fancied an MX-5 to piss about in and I was looking at a 2001 1.8. His only response was that it was a pretty old car and I could do better buying a newer one. A few months ago I was pondering the idea of chopping in my relatively new 370Z to get a 1998 Skyline GT-R; his face was a picture. I'm not sure he even knew how to express his disdain at my wish to trade a 4 year old Nissan for a 16 year old Nissan.

Yep, most people I know ask why I want to spend £10K+ on a decade old at least Elise when I can get a brand new ford fiesta for the same money.

Ive realised now that its just not worth explaining certain things to them

I have one 'new' car and one 'old' car. The 'new' one is now 22 years old which apparently can't be counted as new any more.

I like it when my friends say oh I bought a new car when in fact its leased. They then turn to me and go well why dont you get a new car (lease car) to which I explain that why would I do that when my car cost half that of the deposit you paid on your base spec corsa that your going to have to give back in three years after paying a ridiculous amount of money with nothing to show for it.

Another resent one was why would i want to change the oil its only 3 years old punch

Combine the two and it's probably best that it goes back when it does!

Cleaned the car this morning, thought I'd spend a bit longer on it than normal and give it a coat of wax ready for winter.

"you can do mine when you're finished mate"

Had that about 5 times from neighbours, dog people and the postman. One bloke even stopped his car and wound his window down to say it. FFS at least think of something original to say.

Back out here in a sec for round 2, wonder how many more times I'll get it...

Offer to do it, walk over with a packet of Brillo pads and see what they say.

I guess the age related thing is the mark of a complete non-petrol head. Sure they might think they are, and may even be on PH, discussing the relative merits of a 335d over a 330d ( rolleyes ), but people who appreciate cars, will get it regardless of age.

I think it is a fashion thing - nobody would choose to wear a 90's shell suit (without a strong sense of irony), or 80's shoulder pads (ditto), or choose an iPhone 3 over a 6, or (gasp!) a non-smart phone. Progress is related to age, technology advances, why on earth would you want something old. You wouldn't go out of your way to buy a CRT TV when you can pop into John Lewis and walk out with a state-of-the-art 4K LED TV would you? How can a 70's super car, 80's hatch, a 90's rally-rep or 00's whatever be better than the latest white goods from [insert fashionable mainstream manufacturer]?

Critically speaking, almost everything made today is better than the equivalents of the past, and usually cheaper.
However I can't see how anyone could argue that they would rather have an old CRT TV versus a modern one. In the same way that I would be amazed if somebody wanted a 1994 Ford Escort Popular rather than a brand new Focus.

However that's because those are white goods which are designed to fill a purpose but not to be interesting. If you told me that you'd rather have a Ferrari 512TR from 1994 rather than whatever the equivalent is now, I would fully understand although in critical terms the new one is superior. Each are exciting, but different in their ways.

I disagree, it's not a fashion thing. There are a great many old cars I'd like to drive, and old guitars I'd like to play, and not because I, or anyone else, thinks they're fashionable.

A new keyboard is probably much easier to play than a 40 year old hammond organ. It'll be more advanced, more reliable, better constructed.

But not as good.
Of course there are, but that is because we are enthusiasts, and others are not.
