Certainly no myth. RS4's will develop this problem over time. As far as I know its only the 4.2 FSI engine and doesn't appear in the 40v design in the S4
Previous model S3 also suffered quite a bit. Apparently they added an indirect injector to help alleviate the problem in the current (new) model. Time will tell if it makes any difference.

Challenge them to a race from one end of the country to the other. Make it a requirement not to exceed the posted limits. A faster car will still win by quite a margin, or at least that's what I would expect from my experience of reasonably long journeys. The scale of the difference depends on the type of roads, but it can be as much as 10 mins per hour between a slow and a fast car (more overtakes, less acceleration time, easier to maintain speed on inclines etc).

In any case, the kind of people who say that drive at 40mph in 5th everywhere except on the motorway. One of my brothers (to shame) never goes above about 3000rpm as describes 45mph as a 'good speed' for NSL country roads. He takes ages to get anywhere!
True, apart from a 'fast car' will need more fuel stops. Average it out over a countrywide journey, plus traffic/congestion fking everything up - probably not big of a difference in it!

The reason to have a fast car, is not the destination but the journey! As with life, you may as well have some fun along the way.

Of course, because fast cars always use more fuel and have the same size tank as every other car rolleyes

Not in my experience. Some numbers (averaged over a lot of drives in each case over the same route in the same traffic conditions):-

Cheverolet Kalos - proper slow- Av 2 hours; fastest 1 hr 50.
320i - medium - Av 1hr 50; fastest 1hr 40
Cayman S - fast - Av 1hr 45; fastest 1h 35

In each car, I respect speed limits and try to drive as fast as is safe within the limits (i.e. I absolutely nailed the Kalos to get it to go!)

Can I nominate myself? Got back to my desk and my colleague and a friend are talking automotive - they're not die-hard car fans but will appreciate what an M3 is when you point it out to them. The conversation went as follows:

Colleague 1: "It really shifts, you know. I can't believe how fast 110 horsepower is!"
Colleague 2: "I can imagine, my Insight has about the same power but it must be really different for you."
Colleague 1: "It's the fastest thing I've ever had. I seriously don't think I'll ever need more power as I'd kill myself otherwise."
Colleague 2: "Haha, yeah I agree."

I chuckled to myself and thought to myself "yeah, 110 horsepower is really going to kill you." Colleague 1 then comes over excitedly to talk to me.

Colleague 1: "Seb! Did you hear? I finally got a new runabout!"
Me: "Yeah, I heard, 110bhp could be a bit of a handful, right?" [implied sarcasm wasn't picked up]
Colleague 1: "You'll have to come for a spin at some point, I bet you'll love the power!"
Me: "Sure..." [very sarcastically]
Colleague 1: "Don't be scared, you've been on a bike before haven't you?"

...

</facepalm>

On second thought, the bike helmet on colleague 2's desk should have been a dead giveaway. I'm an idiot.

Question to "Honest John" in this weekend's Telegraph motoring.

"Is my BMW X3 safe to drive in snow ?"

My answer...NO,stay at home if you're that useless.

HJ's answer was typically measured.winter tyres etc etc.

You could probably enter a question per week from HJ's column.
If it was the S-drive version wouldn't that be a valid question? Or am I being dense?

70 bhp on my suzuki SV650 has always put a smile on my face (so has 10,000 rpm).

I recently also aquired a 1000 cc yamaha FZ1s, which has somewhere around 130 bhp (reports on the power vary). It feels very, very fast

my civic has 110 bhp. Foot flat on the floor in 3rd gear is....calm, serene, gentile.

A mate got in my Fiesta ST the other day and after a bit of semi-spirited driving (enough to hear the 4 pot powaaaa) he asked me if it was a diesel. Now I'm sad.
An ex-girlfriend asked me once if my old Evo IX FQ-340 was a diesel. I think that's the default question non-petrol heads ask about anything.
Yep.

When I had my '00 Impreza turbo, this lad was eyeing the bonnet scoop and asked; "Is that the diesel mate?"
I was asked the same about my Evo. What is wrong with people confused

And I have been asked this about my Cayman a couple of times as well. Very odd.

Some people also seem to think it's a Ferrari, because it's red.

That's like assuming a football team is Rangers because they play in blue.

Oh, wait, I do that.

Some years ago I was flicking through the TV channels and there was a Scottish team, possibly Hearts or Hibs (possibly not), playing against a European team (must have been a long time ago!). The team wearing what I knew to be the Scottish team's home colours were running rings round their opponents. I watched for a few minutes (exceeding my annual quota of football watching) and carried on channel hopping. Next day at work I mentioned to a football-minded colleague that Hearts (or Hibs or whoever) were looking good last night. He gave me an odd look - "eh? they got humped!" After a bit more discussion I realised the Europeans wore the same colour as the Scots, who were in their away strip. "I thought they had odd names for Scottish footballers", was my lame excuse.

Anyway, moral of the story is, er, well, I forget. Cast not the first stone in a greenhouse, or something.

You might as well arrest anyone who owns that bike, as they are either just back from a trip to 150mph or about to go on one. You simply cannot use that kind of power without ripping the arse out of any and all speed limits!

From 40mph, WOT in any gear would take you well into 3 figures before you can unwind the gas.

I had a FZ1s as my previous bike. Great fun and really wakes up >6.5k rpm. They make about 135 at the wheel according to general wisdom and due to the upright riding position feel faster than a sportsbike with similar power (Had a ZX-9R before the Fazer).

Back down to a BMW R1100S, and it feels slow. Good for commuting though (When I can be bothered).

On the subject of bikes....

I was on the phone to Sky to negotiate a discount on my monthly, so being as polite as possible

Sky customer Service guy: Can I take your password?
Me: No idea, can I reset?
Sky: Of course, what would you like?
Me: Er... go for Ducati(engine size)
Sky: did you say docathy? is that D, O
Me: No, Ducati, the motorbikes (spelt for him)
Sky: Ah right, sorry, have you got one of those, i really like them
Me: Yep
Sky: Nice, they are really good looking cars, I love those especially the new one
Me: yes they are.

Could of been a slip I know, but did make me laugh.

Got discount too
