I've got a 1.2 Clio, not sure what I'd hit first in third gear, 80 or the limiter but I'd presume the limiter. Certainly wouldn't want to ever try it.
Well in my Corsa, i'd be doing nearly 4000 revs at 70ish in 5th gear so i can't imagine 3rd gear would hold out too well smile

In what world is overtaking illegal? probably the same one her alto is faster than my celica.

Well, I think she's got you there, all she has to do is stay in front driving at the speed limit and you won't be any faster.

Who said anything about a road? If they were going to race I assumed they would do it where speed limits do not apply. Take both cars to Santa Pod and have a proper race.

Assuming she gets up to the speed limit faster which I cant see happening

One of the cons (that's also often a pro) to owning an M3, S4, C63 etc, is that they look similar to the more humble models at a glance, despite being like night and day to own, drive and enjoy.

Years of M3 ownership would often result in some "nice car" conversations, where people would talk at length about when they had one, or their mate that owns the diesel one.

The flip side is also true, of course, where we "enthusiasts" will risk deriding another individual's affection for their own vehicle, as we own the "proper" one. I often will smile and nod along when hearing tales of how someones 1.8 is "really fast", and remember to be humble that they don't have the same basis for comparison as I may, after a life long mis-spent quest for bigger and faster automotive experiences.

My crash last year?

I guess at least that would be a story to tell rather than 'I pulled out of a junction without looking sufficiently'

Non petrolhead: "What car do you drive?"
Me: "a golf"
Non petrolhead: "nice, what engine size?"
Me: "2.0 turbo diesel"
Non petrolhead: "Not bad. My 1 series is a 1.6, but it's basically a 2 litre".

The E87 116d and the later E87 116i do have 2 litre engines - could be the source of the confusion.

Depending on the year and variant, it might very well displace near 2000cc. BMW badging often doesn't relate to engine size.

116 with a 2.0 engine and much confusion on the part of the NPH?

if it's been well looked after, is a great example, the book price is somehow wrong and the salesman is trying to mug you off, then why on earth are you trying to chop it in? If it's a great car, sell it privately for the price you want. If you can't, then maybe the price you want is the one that's unrealistic. It's only worth what someone will pay - and yes the book price (and actually it's a number of prices depending on condition, not a single price) is an aggregate. However if you just know it's worth more not sure why you would be pissing into the wind getting red-faced on a dealer forecourt. If you can't sell it privately or as a P/X then it's time to acknowledge that you might be wrong.
Not sure why you keep telling me I am wrong?

I don't want to deal with the people this thread is about and tyre kickers, thought I had made this quite plain but obviously not.

I prefer to deal with dealers as they are supposed to know what they are doing and makes the change easier (especially as I need to transfer my non-dating registration plate). Point I was trying to make is some of the dealers I have spoken to recently seem to be on a par with the people this thread is about.

Thanks for your advice however.
Probably it is also related to them not really wanting the car. If it's a car that will be difficult to shift they'll just give a very low price. If you don't take it they don't worry about a car taking up space, if you do they can sell it cheap but still at a profit so that it's likely to move more quickly.

I know that there is a lot of confusion on the subject, but this particular model was actually a 1.6. In retrospect I could see how confusion could creep in.

Getting in my car

Them: "What's that?"
Me: "Boost Gauge"
T: "But this isn't turbocharged?"
M: It is, listen (make blow off noise)
T: "Oh, is it a diesel then?"
M: "No, it's a petrol"
T: It can't be turbocharged then, only diesels have turbos.
M: .....

This is the same person who asked me why I would want to buy a 10 year old M3 when I can finance a new one for less. Telling him that I planned to keep it and not swap it in after 3 years fell on deaf ears and a confused "Why? They all start breaking from 3 years old anyway, that's why the warranty is only that long"

I won't tell him that I'm considering a 15 year old imported Nissan.
