How has that engine survived, if the top looks that bad how on earth is the oil pick up pipe from the sump not clogged up?!

interesting question though - how much did said person save themselves up until that point in not having the car serviced?
Ignoring the fact that there may be a hefty engine bill for cleaning/repairing/rebuilding and the damage to resale value, maybe nothing. If you said that the performance is now 10% down and deteriorated linearly then that's 5% more fuel on say 84,000 miles at 21 mpg so that 5% of 4,000 gallons at £6 per gallon which is £1,200 which may well be the cost of three 20,000 mile services at 20K, 40K, and 60K after the last service. You can nudge those figures up and down to your hearts content but the answer will still be that any short term saving is likely to be minimal, if anything and long term it's costly.

Prestige Motor Services - "We recently had an Audi TT 3.2 V6 because of an engine issue...The guys opened it up and this is what we found. This is the worst engine we have ever seen. Judging by the service manual it looks to have been 83,296 miles since the last service."

A testament to Audi engineering that the thing was running at all !
What is all the gunk? If it's mixed with oil, did they keep topping the oil up when the light came on?

Yeah, serious. What causes the gunk to form?

Have a read of this. Not a brilliant explanation but the first one I found that saved me a lot of typing:

Oil that is so old its lost so much of its lubricating properties. Its effectively just lumps of carbon you can see.

I remember a similar post about a BMW engine in the US. Someones mate asked them to come over as the engine light was on, he asked when they last had it serviced "eh what's that then". No oil change for something in the region of 100,000 miles. It's amazing they cope that far.

There was a US YouTube video I saw a while back where they de-gunked an engine in exactly the same condition over several days.

I think is was this one, or something similar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC-SxrsgEwo

By the time you tot up the labour and materials to do a job like that it's got to be pretty steep!!

Not sure that engine would pass a mot on the emissions, then again guess it can't be burning any oil as it has none tongue out
